COLUMBUS Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis, who won the Nagurski Award last season, is one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award. Laurinaitis is the 13th finalist from Ohio State, which has produced six winners of the award, more than any school in the country.

The other finalists are Michigan offensive lineman Jake Long, Virginia defensive end Chris Long and LSU defensive end Glenn Dorsey.

Laurinaitis is having arguably his finest season. A year ago, he led the Bucks in tackles with 115 and four sacks.

This season, Laurinaitis has 85 tackles and five sacks with two games to play.

Len Robbins just threw JL in the Heisman discussion...

I'm surprised that it's actually taken this long. I've heard Dorsey (LSU) in the talks, but had yet to hear anything about Lil Animal. I think the media is just so down on the Big Ten that they almost "forget" about him. It would be great to hear Heisman talk including his name, Boeckman & Beanie.

Laurinaitis is a shoe-in for the award. James "beat" Dan Connor in a head-to-head match up the same way Poz "beat" AJ Hawk. Makes sense to me!

Well, if he stays, maybe next year we can have 3 guys finish in the top 6, like 1973.

Laurinaitis named a finalist for Butkus and Lombardi awards

By Doug Harris

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State's James Laurinaitis won the Nagurski Award as the nation's best defensive player last season, and he may have to install another shelf or two in his trophy case this year.
The junior All-American was named one of three finalists for the Butkus Award, which goes to the nation's top linebacker. Laurinaitis, who spearheads the stingiest defense in the country, also is one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award (top linebacker or lineman).

If you're talking about OSU winning the game then I can agree. If you are going by stats of this game you're off the mark. JL actually had one of his worst games as a Buckeye against PSU this year, of course they game-planned specifically for him and Freeman was everywhere in lieu of that fact. Connor had a decent game for them and since he's becoming the PSU all-time leading tackler this week, he's going to be tough to beat out.

If they take a special look at intangibles I too think JL should win. On stats alone this season JL won't win it.

I think he was just being sarcastic. Everyone and their mom knew Hawk should win the award but seemingly since PSU beat OSU that year, the award went to Poopshootsky. I think Connor may be the top LB in the country honestly but it would be nice to see just for what was done to Hawk.
