LB Coach James Laurinaitis (2x B1G DPOY, 2006 Nagurski, 2007 Butkus, 2008 Lott, 3x All-American, OSU HOF)

Laurinaitis returns to practice field
By BILL COATS | Posted: Monday, August 15, 2011

St. Louis Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis returned to practice Monday after being sidelined for a few days with a strained chest muscle. "You just have to be careful with strains," he explained. "Because you get something tight with too much force on it and resistance, and you're worried about tearing it, and that'd be a nightmare. I'm feeling fine."

Laurinaitis confident chemistry will develop
Andrew Astleford
August 18, 2011

ST. LOUIS ? Experience surrounds him, so James Laurinaitis is confident the chemistry between linebackers will come.

Laurinaitis stood 10 feet away from fellow linebacker Brady Poppinga, a seven-year veteran, after practice Thursday at Rams Park. Each player spoke about how they can serve as the spirit of the St. Louis Rams' defense.

Both share traits making that possible. They are vocal and aggressive. They search for chances to deliver pad-popping hits that will make their teammates want to do the same to someone else. They understand their role as the eyes that connect the secondary and defensive line.

"You have to set the tempo for the defense," said Laurinaitis, who had 114 tackles and three sacks in his second season last year. "Speaking for the middle guys, the (linebackers) have to make the call as the quarterback of the defense. They organize the front. They organize any stunts. They organize any checks in and out of pressures."

B&C Morning Show: Rams? James Laurinaitis Ready For The Giants
September 16, 2011

St. Louis Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis called into the hotline as we prepare for the Rams and Giants game on Monday Night Football.

James states right off the bat that he?s relieved he doesn?t have to worry about Eli Manning beating the Rams with his foot speed, considering St. Louis was defeated by Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1.

After that, Laurinaitis breaks down the things he saw from the Giants on the game film of their Week 1 loss to the Washington Redskins.

He also goes on to heap lofty praise on second-year quarterback Sam Bradford, and talks about how his positive attitude and insatiable work ethic trickles down to the rest of the team.

The guys also ask Laurinaitis about what feelings he has toward his alma mater Ohio State in the wake of all of the NCAA violations that culminated in the resignation of head coach Jim Tressel.

Defensive end Chris Long already had a year under his belt in the NFL when the Rams selected Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis in the second-round of the 2009 draft.

So on a Rams roster that has seen massive turnover under general manager Billy Devaney and coach Steve Spagnuolo, he has insights on Laurinaitis like few others on the team.

For example: "He has this red sweater vest that he wears so he can look like Coach (Jim) Tressel," Long said. "One time I went over to his house unexpectedly. I opened the door and he was just sitting there in his red sweater vest. He was watching old Ohio State tape."

Or: "He's a prototypical linebacker. I think he would eat a football if he could. I think he would actually try to eat a football if he could."

And: "It's football, football, football with him. Sometimes I come down here at 10 at night (to Rams Park) and have to pull him out of a meeting room. He's just watching film, and he's wearing his Ohio State sweat suit."

OK, only one of these statements by Long about Laurinaitis is false.

"I do not have a sweater vest, no," Laurinaitis said. "I will deny that."

As for eating a football, well, "I think he's right," Laurinaitis said. "If football was edible ... You know, it is a huge part of my makeup. I'm not ashamed of that."

LAURINAITIS CAPTAINS BUCKEYES

Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis used the bye week to check out his alma mater, Ohio State, on its first visit to Lincoln, Neb., to face the newest member of the Big Ten Conference.

"I think it's a great addition to the Big Ten, just the passion that they have for football. It seems like a natural fit geographically. There's a blue-collar mentality like a lot of the Big Ten schools have," Laurinaitis said. "The fans are extremely respectful. When Ohio State went off the field, they gave us a standing ovation. They know their football."

Perhaps the Cornhuskers faithful found it easy to be gracious after Nebraska rallied from a 21-point deficit to beat Laurinaitis' Buckeyes 34-27. Laurinaitis watched from the sidelines, one of the perks that comes with the job of honorary captain.

Laurinaitis said he got a call from Buckeyes coach Luke Fickell, who asked if Laurinaitis was up for the honor. Among his duties: addressing the team.

"He asked. I said, 'Why not?'" Laurinaitis said. "I told them to stick together. I said, 'There probably will be a lot of bad things in the media. When that happens, you have to draw together. You play for the love of each other and play for your university. Only the guys in the room know what you're going through. It's a time to come closer together.'"
