Rams coach enjoys bye weekend with bike ride in Forest Park
BY STEVE KORTE - News-Democrat

Rams rookie linebacker James Laurinaitis also went back to his alma mater, Ohio State.

"It gave me chance to see a lot of familiar faces, a lot of guys I spent the last four years of my life with, and the coaching staff,'' Laurinaitis said. "I felt like was back with the big family that Ohio State is.''

Scouts' views: Schaub has complete game; Cole's engine never idles

Eleven observations and opinions after Week 11 from two NFL scouts, one from an NFC team and the other from an AFC team:

5. Rams rookie MLB James Laurinaitis has a nose for the ball. He's not a violent tackler and isn't going to really knock anybody out, but he's going to sniff the ball out and have a lot of tackles. He has the instincts to find where the ball is. Whatever he lacks physically -- he's not the fastest or most explosive -- he'll make up for by just being a football player.

8 tackles and a sack today

that puts him at 84 tackles, a sack, and 2 ints on the season

gotta think hes in the running for defensive ROY

Box score actually lists 9, and they are all solo which is impressive.

Unfortunately I think Cushing gets it, almost identical numbers on a better team.

LB James Laurinaitis suffered a mild sprain of his right shoulder late in the game. ?There?s six types of degrees, and this is the lesser of the degrees. So that?s a good thing,? Spagnuolo said. ?We?ll see what we can do with him on Wednesday.?

*According to the coaches? film review, Laurinaitis had 10 tackles, pushing his team-high season total to 106

In four seasons at Ohio State, linebacker James Laurinaitis lost only eight football games. He topped that total less than three months into his rookie season with the Rams. Even at 1-10, winning remains just as important to him as if the team was 10-1.

"That's kind of the way that I've always played football," Laurinaitis said. "You go out to win no matter what your record is, no matter what happens. So that's what we're doing, and hopefully we'll get this thing snowballing and get some momentum going into next season."

Even with losing streaks of historic proportion for the franchise, Laurinaitis says he's still eager to get out on the field every week. In his mind, even bad football is better than no football.

"You've got a few weeks left and that's it," he said. "Then you're sitting there kind of bored all offseason thinking: When's next season going to come up? Counting down.

"I remember when I was in high school, I always used to count down to the next time that camp opened. That's how excited I was. I knew how many days I had to prepare. It'll be the same thing this year."

St. Louis Rams keep morale up despite 1-10 record - STLtoday.com

Retired Rams and Chiefs quarterback Trent Green will work as the Fox analyst on the Rams-Bears game Sunday in Chicago. I asked Green to identify building-block players on the Rams roster (besides Steven Jackson.) Green touted rookie middle linebacker James Laurinaitis. "You can build a defense around him," Green said. "I've found that I can sit and talk football with James all day long. He's so serious, professional, and prepared."

[sarcasm]It's too bad that he's not as good as Aaron Curry, Brian Cushing, or Rey Maualuga.[/sarcasm]

Almost missed the sarcasm font on that one. In looking up the stats to tell you that you were full of it, I discovered that JL has more solo tackles than Maualuga and Clay Matthews combined for total tackles. JL also is also only two tackles shy of Ray Lewis' season total. Not bad for a guy who was considered an overrated college player by many (despite being one of the most awarded college LBs ever). Great to see JL exceeding at the next level. He probably won't get much recognition unless the Rams rise into contention in the league, but he is definitely carrying on the tradition of exceptional Ohio State defensive players in the NFL.
