Rolle demoted; Jordan starting at weak-side linebacker

The Eagles promoted Akeem Jordan to starting weak-side linebacker in place of the struggling Brian Rolle, Andy Reid said today.
Rolle had a rough game Friday night against the Browns and did not put a stamp on the position through the preseason. Jordan, the long-time Eagle who has started at all three linebacker positions at some point in his career, gets another chance with the first team
Rolle: I'll be starting again 'very soon'

Brian Rolle lost his job Sunday morning when the coaches informed him that Akeem Jordan would be the new weakside linebacker.
That?s OK, Rolle said. He?ll have it back soon enough.
How soon?
?Very soon,? Rolle responded after Sunday night?s Flight Night practice at Lincoln Financial Field.
By the season opener, on Sept. 9?
?Possibly,? he said.
Rolle, who started the last 13 games of last season at the weak side as a rookie, continues to have a higher opinion of his preseason performance than others do.
He scoffed at suggestions after Friday night?s preseason game against Cleveland that his job might be in jeopardy, even after he committed two offside penalties on the defense?s first series and hasn?t made many impact plays since camp started at Lehigh more than four weeks ago.
After the coaches handed his job to Jordan, Rolle didn?t seem to understand why.
?It is what is, that?s all I can say,? he said. ?Like I said, it was a surprise to me, but I don?t make the decisions out there on the field. I feel like I played good and the coaches didn?t think so.?
Rolle?s roster spot now comes into question. The starters right now are Jordan, DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks. Jamar Chaney has been nagged by a hamstring injury but he?s not getting cut. Casey Matthews, out with a high-ankle sprain, is the backup middle linebacker. Ryan Rau, a rookie free agent out of Portland State, has run at middle linebacker with the twos with Chaney and Matthews sidelined and the coaches seems to be impressed.
There?s no guarantee they even keep six linebackers, with Chaney, Jordan and Matthews capable of playing multiple spots.
?I feel like I played well enough last year,? Rolle said. ?Even though I?m not starting, they still feel like they need me here -- hopefully.?

Immokalee inducts four into Hall of Fame
Sep. 17, 2012

On Friday night at Immokalee High School's Gary Bates Stadium, the school inducted four former athletes into the school's new Hall of Fame.
Our last Inductee is Brian Rolle. Brian could not attend at this time because of his obligation with the Philadelphia Eagles. Accepting on his behalf is his mother, Sandra Coleman. Brian was a two-way starter for the Indians, starting both at middle linebacker and tailback. He was recruited for Division I programs at both positions and chose Ohio State partially due to their commitment to let him play the linebacker position he loved. At I H S he was a sophomore on the state championship team and captain of the 10-0 team his senior year. He was selected as an all-state player both his junior and senior years. He is the only two-time winner of the Naples Daily News Broxson trophy for the area's best football player. In addition to football, he was an all state wrestler and lettered in track as well. Brian went on to be a two-year starter at middle linebacker for Ohio State University. He was a team captain his senior year and led the team in tackles. He received all big ten honors in 2010 before being drafted in the 2011 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles where he continues play today. Congratulations Brian Rolle.
Eagles release Brian Rolle; sign LB Adrian Moten

They fall fast.
A little over a month after he lost the starting weak-side linebacker spot, Brian Rolle was waived by the Eagles.
Rolle's release was presumably a response to the Eagles' poor performance on special teams, especially the kick return cover unit that was gashed by the New York Giants on Sunday.
The Eagles brought back linebacker Adrian Moten, who spent the preseason here, to take Rolle's place on the 53-man roster.
The Eagles also released long snapper Kyle Nelson from the practice squad and re-signed offensive linemen Julian Vandervelde, who was recently cut from the Tampa Bay practice squad.

Eagles waive Brian Rolle
By Jeff McLane
Inquirer Staff Writer
For the second straight Tuesday, the Eagles addressed their subpar special teams by releasing a player whose roster spot appeared safe not all that long ago.
Last week, it was punter Chas Henry. This week, the Eagles waived linebacker Brian Rolle, who was the starting weakside linebacker just a little more than a month ago.
Rolle's role had shifted to special teams after he was demoted. After the Eagles kick-return cover team was gashed by the New York Giants on Sunday, somebody presumably had to pay.
"It is what it is," Rolle said during a phone interview. "I appreciate the opportunity. I don't have anything bad to say about the team. But I think I got stuck in a bad situation. They were talking about improving special teams. Kickoffs weren't good. It could be more than that."
Rolle said he was awakened by a call from coach Andy Reid informing him that he had been released. Two days earlier, the Eagles had allowed the Giants' David Wilson to return six kicks for an average of 36.2 yards.
It took a group effort (or lack thereof) to allow those returns, but Rolle completely missed on one tackle attempt Sunday and had yet to stand out on any of the special-teams units. The Eagles credited him with one special-teams tackle in four games.
Last season as a rookie, Rolle started in the final 13 games when he took over for the struggling Casey Matthews. He showed some playmaking ability and finished the season with 63 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble that he returned for a touchdown against the Bears.
Rolle, drafted in the sixth round last year, held onto his starting spot when training camp opened in July. But he lost the job to Akeem Jordan after the third preseason game as his play seemingly regressed.
Jordan strained his hamstring, and Rolle jumped in against the Cardinals. But he did little in relief. When Jordan was ruled out for the Giants game, the Eagles gave Jamar Chaney the start over Rolle.
"I was a starter, and then I was moved to special teams, something I wasn't used to," Rolle said. "I felt like I was productive on defense. I know our defense in and out. If someone asked, I could write the entire playbook out."
cont..
ILB Brian Rolle: Rolle was signed to a future/reserve contract in January after spending two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Rolle made 13 starts and recorded 54 tackles as a rookie in Philadelphia, but fell into a reserve role last season. He was released last October.
LOLB: LaMarr Woodley, Adrian Robinson
ROLB: Jason Worilds, Jarvis Jones
ILB:Lawrence Timmons, Larry Foote
ILB: Marshall McFadden, Vince Williams, Stevenson Sylvester
Just as most had begun to write off Robinson, he scored the Steelers only TD of the game by falling on a loose ball. Tomlin is looking for opportunistic players. Robinson may get out of the coach's doghouse yet. Sylvester's ankle injury isn't expected to be serious, and his experience combined with positional flexibility will help him against Brian Rolle; but if Sylvester can't stay healthy, Rolle will be first in line for his spot. V. Williams is probably a gameday inactive like Robinson was in 2012.
16 Defensive Players Left Fighting For Roster Spots
Posted on 26 August 2013 by Dave Bryan
Brian Rolle – ILB – Rolle has played alongside McFadden quite a bit with the second-string defense and now that Sylvester is gone you have to like his chances at making the final 53 man roster. He is out of practice squad eligibility, so either he does or he’s gone for good.
