NAPLES ? Immokalee High graduate Brian Rolle hasn?t had much time to relax since Ohio State University?s victory in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4.

The senior middle linebacker has been preparing for Saturday?s East-West Shrine Classic at 4 p.m. in Orlando, where he has another chance to showcase his abilities to NFL teams. He is one of three Buckeyes on the East squad. The game is not on national television.

Rolle has been contacted by multiple NFL teams. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears have shown the most interest, he said, adding that he met with Tampa Bay?s management Monday.

The Shrine Classic itself has been a learning experience. ?It?s a lot of fun. It?s a lot different from what I learned in college,? he said after the first practice. ?The competition is even stiffer, and we?re learning new schemes.?

?It?s more of the techniques,? said Rolle, especially excited to be playing alongside Georgia linebacker Akeem Dent and against Hawaii running back Alex Green. ?We?re only playing two defenses in the game. Technique makes all the difference in the world.?

NFL staffs like what they see in Rolle, who led the 12-1 Buckeyes with 76 tackles. The All-Big Ten Conference first-team selection added 2 1/2 sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.

But his size is an issue for some. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 218 pounds, Rolle is undersized for a middle linebacker.

That is nothing new, said Luke Fickell, Ohio State?s co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. ?The size issue?s not going to change,? he said. ?It doesn?t hold him back.?

Football: Immokalee grad Rolle shows his nose for ball at East-West Shrine Game

ORLANDO ? Brian Rolle had one goal in mind this week at the East-West Shrine game.

The Ohio State linebacker and Immokalee High grad wanted to change the way he believes NFL teams have perceived him.

?That?s why I?m so excited about this week, just to show guys that what you think of me ? it?s totally wrong,? Rolle said following Saturday?s East-West Shrine Game at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Rolle certainly distinguished himself in the East?s 25-8 victory with two tackles, a forced fumble ? on the game?s first play, no less ? and one pass defensed. But that was just part of it.

Upon arriving in Orlando for practice and to meet with NFL scouts, Rolle wanted to show them that any concerns about his size (5-foot-10, 228 pounds) and whether he can hold up in traffic against the big boys.

A solid week of practice and a good game on Saturday hopefully took care of that.

?Coaches, after this week, see that I can play with the big guys and the best players in the country and that I can hold up,? Rolle said.

Though he played middle linebacker at Ohio State, Rolle was used at both outside spots in the East?s 4-3 defensive scheme. In Saturday?s game, he spent most of his playing time ? the first and third quarters ? in coverage and actually made a nice play tipping a pass away from tight end Julius Thomas to prevent a long pass.

By playing on the outside, which could be where he finds himself in the NFL, Rolle also got a chance to line up closer to the line of scrimmage than he did at Ohio State.

?This week was a learning week and I feel like I?ve gotten so much better at it,? Rolle said. ?If that?s one thing I take away from this week, it?s getting up on that line and being physical with tight ends on the line. ? I feel like if I had to go back to Ohio State, I?d want to play on the line because I feel good at it now.?

He had like two tackles. Not a great game but the game does not mean as much as what he showed in the week of practice!!! Bottom line I just do not see him getting drafted, maybe free agent if he is lucky!! His size is killing him!!! Good luck to Rolle!!!

Rolle gets it right

In 2006, college recruiters fawned over Immokalee linebacker Brian Rolle. And really, what wasn?t to like?

Rolle?s undeniable talents on the football field ? he is one of only four players to twice be named The News-Press High School Football Player of the Year in the 44-year history of the award ? were matched by equally impressive academics in the classroom.

Rolle received a number of FBS college offers, but decided to verbally commit to Ohio State in December, 2006, two months before National Signing Day.

That doesn?t mean, however, Rolle?s recruitment ended. Florida coach Urban Meyer continued to pursue him and convinced Rolle to meet with him one more time.

?I had to think about it again because I had some doubts,? Rolle said. ?But Ohio State and Coach (Jim) Tressel, that was were I felt the most comfortable.

?It was one of the better decisions of my life. It shaped who I am and who I?m going to become.?

Rolle, who had a standout performance at the East-West Shrine Bowl on Jan. 22, is preparing for the NFL Combine in March. He also has a 2.85 GPA and is on track to graduate from Ohio State in June with a degree in sociology.

But things weren?t always rosy with the Buckeyes. Rolle faced one of his biggest challenges before he ever arrived in Columbus.

Ohio State?s cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Beckman, the coach who nurtured a relationship with Rolle and helped convince him to join the Buckeyes, left to become Oklahoma State?s defensive coordinator in early 2007.

?That really upset me,? Rolle said. ?He was the guys I was closest to. But luckily Coach Tressel and the other coaches were here all four years and I developed great relationships with them.?

Stats show he only had 1 forced fumble. Also they show him at 5'9" thats why I just do not see him being drafted. Hope I am wrong we know the kid can ball!!!

I stood next to him the other day for about 5 mins talking to him and if he's 5'9" then I shrunk 2 inches in those 5 minutes. Amazing!
