Rolle gets it right
In 2006, college recruiters fawned over Immokalee linebacker Brian Rolle. And really, what wasn?t to like?
Rolle?s undeniable talents on the football field ? he is one of only four players to twice be named The News-Press High School Football Player of the Year in the 44-year history of the award ? were matched by equally impressive academics in the classroom.
Rolle received a number of FBS college offers, but decided to verbally commit to Ohio State in December, 2006, two months before National Signing Day.
That doesn?t mean, however, Rolle?s recruitment ended. Florida coach Urban Meyer continued to pursue him and convinced Rolle to meet with him one more time.
?I had to think about it again because I had some doubts,? Rolle said. ?But Ohio State and Coach (Jim) Tressel, that was were I felt the most comfortable.
?It was one of the better decisions of my life. It shaped who I am and who I?m going to become.?
Rolle, who had a standout performance at the East-West Shrine Bowl on Jan. 22, is preparing for the NFL Combine in March. He also has a 2.85 GPA and is on track to graduate from Ohio State in June with a degree in sociology.
But things weren?t always rosy with the Buckeyes. Rolle faced one of his biggest challenges before he ever arrived in Columbus.
Ohio State?s cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Beckman, the coach who nurtured a relationship with Rolle and helped convince him to join the Buckeyes, left to become Oklahoma State?s defensive coordinator in early 2007.
?That really upset me,? Rolle said. ?He was the guys I was closest to. But luckily Coach Tressel and the other coaches were here all four years and I developed great relationships with them.?
