LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

A Glance at 2 Plays That Tell the Story of the Game
Posted by Bobby Carpenter on 10/1/2013

The best method to stop an opposing offense is to force them to beat you left-handed. Wisconsin has run the ball very effectively through 4 games and the Bucks were going to force Stave to beat them down the field against some coverages that were much better against the run than against the pass. To Joel Stave’s credit, he played extremely well. The guy came out and made the plays that were there. He hit his receivers with some difficult throws. He had plenty of time, but that was all predicated off of the fear of letting White and Gordon have success.

Bye Week Corrections and Hawkeye Attack
Posted by Bobby Carpenter on 10/18/2013

As Ohio State enters the second half of their season, there were a few issues that they needed to address during the bye week. One of the issues, as of late, has been the pass defense, and most notably in the Red Zone. This has been an area where the Silver Bullets had been particularly good in the past and Wisconsin and Northwestern were able to take advantage of a critical communication breakdown.

The breakdown has occurred when the opposing offense aligns in a formation with three receiving threats to a side and only one to the other. This set poses a challenge to the defense of how to play the inside receiver to the 3-man side (#3) and the lone receiver to the other side (the X). The 2 options lie in what the safety to the single receiver does; he can either help double the “X” receiver and leave the linebacker to cover #3 down the middle or he can help the linebacker with #3 and the backside corner has to cover the X receiver all by himself.

Defending "13" Personal and the Iowa Hawkeyes
Posted by Bobby Carpenter on 10/26/2013

The Iowa Hawkeyes took advantage of the bye week before their matchup with Ohio State by pulling out a personal grouping that can cause problems for even the most experienced of defenses. Most football fans have seen the TE craze that has been sweeping the NFL. The New England Patriots started it by running a lot of 2 TE formations and even some 3 TE sets. The versatility of the TE position allows offensive coordinators to be creative with formations. They can line up in the formation below and run the football by creating extra gaps.

Why is the personal grouping called “13?” Personal groups are called in 2 digits numbers. The first number indicates how many RBs are on the field and the second indicates the number of TEs. Since there are only 5 eligible receivers on any given play, that number is implied. So “13” is 1 RB, 3 TEs, and 1 WR. A typical NFL pro style formation would be “21,” for 2 RBs, 1 TE, and 2 WRs.

The Return of the Silver Bullets
Posted by Bobby Carpenter on 10/30/2013

It has felt like far too long since there has been a dominating performance for an entire game by the Ohio State defense, like the one they put together against Penn State. The Nittany Lions were red-hot coming off an exhilarating four-overtime thriller against Michigan. The Nittany Lions were confident, had a big-time receiver and a highly talented quarterback, and just like seemingly every Ohio State opponent they were coming off of a bye week. It was a safe assumption that an offensive mind like Bill O’Brien was going to test the Silver Bullets to see if they got the “13” (three tight end) personal grouping under control and throw some new wrinkles in the game plan. Penn State did just that, but Saturday night under lights, the 2013 Silver Bullet defense finally showed how good they can be when they execute and play up to their abilities.

The defensive line played great. After a first performance against Iowa that tested their resolve, they stepped up and dominated. Noah Spence played extremely well and finally showed the speed and ability that made him a 5-star prospect out of high school. The sack/strip he had was nice, but that was just the tip of the iceberg for his performance.

Decoding the Illini

Posted by Bobby Carpenter on 11/19/2013

The Silver Bullets started fast at the beginning of this past weekend’s game against Illinois. It was similar to the fast starts they have had the previous two games on both offense and defense. The defense looked extremely fierce early, causing turnovers and creating three and out situations. As the game progressed, some of the inexperience at linebacker was exposed. There were linebackers in the right position, but just not able to make every play. It is a peril of youth, but getting players like Joe Burger and Cam Williams valuable experience in a win is important. They will be needed again in the future and now understand what it is like to play meaningful snaps in a Big Ten game where there is limited room for error.

Noah Spence played another complete game. From pressuring the quarterback, playing the run, to even dropping in coverage; he did it all well. He is quickly becoming the most dynamic defensive player in the Big Ten. If he continues to improve, he will become one of the most feared defensive ends in the nation.

Makin some national moves on Get Up this morning

As an aside, if you follow him on twitter you saw him detail how he confronted some people in a grocery store parking lot in an aggressive manner b/c they didn't return their cart to the little cart alley thing. That was embarrassing for him imo

I confront those lazy assholes all the time too. If people would just keep their heads on a swivel, the cart returns are like every other aisle. Stop dinging my prius with your carts!

Screw those people.
And the SUVs full of kids opening their doors into people's cars.
Your fakeass unibody pavement princess mobile isn't even an SUV... it's just a minivan with makeup. But at least minivans have sliding doors so the rugrats cant damage others' property.
