Bobby Carpenter catching on
Nov 04, 2009
Todd Archer/Reporter
No player gets more grief than Bobby Carpenter. A first-round pick in 2006, Carpenter has not developed into the player the Cowboys hoped he would, but he has done some good things this year in the nickel and dime packages.
He's not the physical, brute, stout linebacker but he can run and is good in space.
When he defended Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez two weeks ago the tight end didn't catch a pass. Last week Carpenter had a big sack in the second quarter vs. Seattle and finished with a career-high six tackles according to the coaches' breakdown.
"Well certainly he's playing more and now he's playing better and better," coach Wade Phillips said. "That's whatever the perception, the reality is ... But yeah, he's been solid in a lot of areas and now he's made some plays, and that's what you're looking for in any player. He had to fight to get a role. He's done that."
And now that something positive has been written about Carpenter, let the bashing begin.
Eagles aware of Bobby Carpenter

The recent productive play by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bobby Carpenter caught the attention of Philadelphia offensive coordinator Marty Morhinweg.
``He's very good,'' Morhinweg said. ``He's made a couple of real good tackles with a blocker right there. He's playing at a high level, and they are putting him in situations that are his strength.''
Carpenter, credited with participating in eight tackles and one sack in the last two games, plays primarily in the pass-coverage sub-package. He has played a large role in limiting top-shelf tight ends in the last two games. Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez and Seattle's John Carlson combined for only seven catches.

Cowboys make hospital visits

The Cowboys visited children at four hospitals in Dallas and Fort Worth to spread some holiday cheer.
About a dozen or so players went to different hospitals to sign autographs, deliver presents, take pictures and talk to the kids.
"We all have platforms as athletes and there's no better way to show it than right here at this time of the year," said tight end Jason Witten, who visited children at Scottish Rite. "These kids, they love it. You can make a difference in their lives as they're sitting in their bed and it's Christmas time. I think it makes the transition a little better for them and easier for them. I think all of us are happy to do it."
Bobby Carpenter has made these kinds of visits from his time at Ohio State and continued with the Cowboys, but Monday's trip was his first as a parent. He and his wife, Cortney, had the birth of a son last month.
"You see how much these parents care about their children and it doesn't resonate with you until you have a child of your own and how you would do anything for them," Carpenter said. "It means a lot that we can brighten their child's day."
Bowls offer chance to bond
BY JOE ARNOLD ? The Eagle-Gazette Staff ? December 25, 2009
LANCASTER -- Georgie Carpenter remembers listening to his friends' summer vacation stories with curious interest.
A swimmer and a football player growing up, Carpenter and his three other brothers grew accustomed to taking weekend trips throughout the summer months when their practice schedules allowed.
"Growing up, you'd hear other kids talking about going on vacation here and there," Carpenter said. "The furthest we went on vacations were like Cedar Point and Kings Island. It wasn't until we started going to bowl games that we started seeing other places."

Lancaster native enjoying present with Cowboys, planning for future

LANCASTER -- Bobby Carpenter doesn't see the end of the road, but he knows it's there. Every athlete -- professional or not -- is keenly aware of the clock ticking down on his or her playing career.
Carpenter, a Lancaster native and a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys, remembers the lesson his father, Rob, tried to instill in him.
"He told me no matter how good you are, eventually someone's not going to want to play you," Bobby recalled. "Football, obviously is what I love to do. But one day, it ends for everybody. That's why I've got some stuff I'm starting to work on now."
That "stuff" has included getting married, having a child and planning for a future beyond football.
Bobby and Cortney, his wife of 21 months, welcomed Robert Joseph (R.J.) Carpenter IV on Dec. 1. The couple's first child weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 20 inches long.
"She's hanging in there," Bobby said of his wife. "She's going to have to hang tough through the end of the season. Unfortunately, with the business we're in, there's not a whole lot of time for family."
