LB Anthony Schlegel (Boar Hunter)

Mangold and Jets coach Eric Mangini talked about Bengals linebacker Anthony Schlegel, who was drafted with Mangold in 2006 out of Ohio State.

"He has a thick head," Mangold said of Schlegel, waived on cut-down day by the Jets and signed a day later by the Bengals.

Mangini on Schlegel: "Oftentimes you wish you could keep more guys, and Anthony Schlegel is an impressive, impressive person. Incredibly smart, great, great instincts, and just loves the game of football. I really like him as a person and got to spend a lot of time with him, and obviously we drafted him where we drafted him. I couldn?t be happier for Anthony for the opportunity he?s got. He?s really a great guy."

Bengals: Fact or fiction?

Marvin Lewis Press Conference

Q: (Anthony) Schlegel is a guy who kind of grows on you. He's played through this and played through that, and shows up:
ML: Anthony played at a very high level of college football and won a lot of games. He knows how to do some things right. Because of his inexperience with us, it's important that he gets every step right. He's still a young guy. Whatever he has in shortcomings he makes up for in his knowledge of the game. When you have that, you have to be right in your footwork and foot patterns and everything has to be right. He's worked very hard at it. He's a very diligent worker, very smart guy. He's very intense and the kind of guy you want.

In terms of character and work habits Schlegel probably seems like a breath of fresh air to Lewis.

Of course, had Lewis drafted more wisely, had he judged folk better in FA he could have locker room full of character on D.

Hopefully Anthony is the beginning of the turn away from the dark side for the Bengals D.

always one of my favorite buckeyes.. As a Redshirt Junior he came in behind D'Andrea and never complained, never whined, but rather just kept working KNOWING he'd get his shot sooner than later. Well he did, and he completed one of the best linebacking groups in OSU history. While A.J. was one of our most talented ever here at tosu, I can honestly say Anthony was one of the most underrated and toughest players I've seen come through here. Like the article said he's smart, tough, and knows how's to play. I sure hope Anthony makes it with the Bengal's because a team can never have too many of his type. Great player, and most especially a great person.

Schlegel excited to see old Buckeyes
Linebacker played with the Jets' OSU grads Mangold and Nugent.

CINCINNATI ? Revenge isn't the right word for what's on Anthony Schlegel's mind. Excitement is more like it.

Unceremoniously dumped by the New York Jets, who picked him in the third round of the 2006 NFL draft, the Bengals grabbed him off waivers Sept. 2.

Now he's Cincinnati's starting middle linebacker. And he gets a chance to face his former teammates Sunday, including center Nick Mangold and placekicker Mike Nugent. The trio experienced lots of mud, sweat and cheers at Ohio State.

"I'm excited to play against them, heck yeah," Schlegel said. "It's where all of the guys I got drafted with and guys that I did stuff with, that my wife and our family are close with, so yeah, it's a fun game. But you can't worry about that. I'm worried about what I can do for the Cincinnati Bengals."

Anthony Schlegel had a job Tuesday, and that job was to shovel mulch.

For 2? hours he slogged through the soil-enriching mixture as part of the Bengals' effort to build a playground and fitness challenge course in Avondale.

Schlegel was among 30-some players and 350 volunteers who joined coach Marvin Lewis in the NFL/United Way Hometown Huddle program.

Schlegel goes against old team

By Kevin Goheen
Post staff reporter

Nick Mangold had plenty of run-ins with Anthony Schlegel during their days at Ohio State. Mangold was the Buckeyes' center, while Schlegel lined up across the ball as a linebacker.

"He's got a real thick head," said Mangold, now playing center for the New York Jets. "He comes down on you and is not afraid to take on the blocks. It's difficult because linebackers are usually running around, flying around making tackles. Schlegel will take the opportunity to hit you if he's got a chance."

Schlegel didn't get many chances to hit people in his first season in the NFL, playing in just four games for the Jets as a rookie last season. His chances didn't look much better entering this season when he didn't get many reps in practice before New York cut him at the end of preseason.

Since joining the Bengals, however, Schlegel has had plenty of opportunities to hit people. The rash of injuries the Bengals have had to deal with at linebacker has pushed Schlegel into the lineup and he responded to the challenge. He made eight tackles last week at Kansas City, including seven solo stops.

"I don't know my role, I just go out there and do what the coaches tell me to do," said Schlegel. "Whatever that is, I'm going to do it with everything I've got and I'm going to do it all for the team. Whatever that entails. I don't worry about whether I'm here or there, I just go out and do what they tell me to do."

Schlegel admits that playing Sunday against the Jets will add to the experience of game day but that he can't get caught up in trying to prove anything to the Jets head coach Eric Mangini or New York's front office. The Jets made a business decision and it has provided Schlegel the chance to play elsewhere.

Schlegel and Dhani Jones were both signed after the preseason and have had to make quick transitions into the Bengals' defensive scheme.

"You love them because when they come to work, they're here, they're fully invested," said linebackers coach Ricky Hunley. "They watch the tape, they study, they ask good questions. They start associating what we do with what they did somewhere else so they put it together a lot faster.

"(Schlegel) can really understand concepts and pick up tips. He can tell you about other people and other teams. Back in the day, old guys would keep books on players. I think he's one of those guys who takes good notes."

OSU influence mutes Michigan supporters
Eyes turn toward big college game

By Kevin Goheen
Post staff reporter

Anthony Schlegel likes going home to Dallas and talking with fellow Ohio State alums. He particularly likes the part when the conversation turns to how many gold pants - the symbol of a Buckeyes win against Michigan - each of them have.

"I have two," said the Bengals middle linebacker, "but I only played them two years. I'm undefeated."

With this year's OSU-Michigan game set for this Saturday, there is a little more Buckeyes backing in the Bengals locker room this season. Schlegel and center Alex Stepanovich joined the team this season, although there are still four Wolverines on the roster: linebackers Dhani Jones and Roy Manning, cornerback Leon Hall and running back Chris Perry.

Of course, Bengals founding father Paul Brown once coached at Ohio State and team president Mike Brown still holds the Buckeyes as a favorite. That tends to quiet a talkative sort such as Perry.

"It's the Browns I worry about. They say stuff and I can't say nothing back," said Perry, who rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns against Ohio State in 2003, the only time Michigan has won in rivalry since Jim Tressel took over in Columbus in 2001. "I'm not even going to predict a score. I'm going to predict that the victors will be victorious. That's all there is."

The Cincinnati Post - OSU influence mutes Michigan supporters

"I think Ohio State will bounce back and get refocused," Schlegel said of the Buckeyes' loss last weekend to Illinois. "Last time we were up there, it was a hard-fought game. We came out and won. We expect the same thing to happen this year."

The Enquirer - Bengals notebook

"All I can say is 'It's five out of the last six,' and 'Appalachian State,' " Schlegel said. "That's the only rebuttal I have. The Buckeyes will win. It'll be a hard-fought game like it is every year, but the Ohio State defense is going to step up and shut down the run."

Then there were nine

The Bengals this afternoon waived two of their 11 linebackers, letting go of Anthony Schlegel and Roy Manning.

Manning is a fourth-year NFL player from Michigan. He played in five games for Cincinnati last season and had seven special teams tackles.

Schlegel is a third-year NFL player from Ohio State. He played in 13 games for the Bengals last season, with five starts, and had 34 tackles on defense with four special teams tackles.

The Bengals still have nine linebackers under contract, not counting first-round draft pick Keith Rivers of Southern Cal.
