LB Andy Katzenmoyer (1997 Butkus Award)

Misdemeanor Charge Dropped Against Former Buckeye Katzenmoyer
Thursday July 18, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus City Attorney?s Office has dropped a misdemeanor charge against former Ohio State Buckeye linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer.

Katzenmoyer faced a misdemeanor charge for allegedly violating a protection order his ex-wife had against him. He was accused of violating it by visiting her house.

She had said that she obtained the order after Katzenmoyer allegedly grabbed her arm in a department store. She later dropped the protection order.

The city attorney said there is not enough evidence to proceed with the case.

College Football's Top 50 Linebackers of the BCS Era
By Braden Gall, 7/26/13

Andy Katzenmoyer, Ohio State
His pro career notwithstanding, the Ohio State tackler was one of college football?s greatest tacklers during his time in Columbus. He was the first true freshman to ever start at linebacker for the Buckeyes, won the Butkus and Lambert Awards as just a sophomore and nearly led OSU to the inaugural BCS title game in 1998. He started all 37 games of his college career and finished with 18 sacks and 50.0 tackles for loss. He was a first-round pick by the Patriots in 1999.

25 years later and I still remember he was taking some sex ed type course (AIDS Awareness) from a woman named ‘Love’, and a couple of other courses that didn’t sound challenging. That would have been a good time to have stayed with the academic privacy guideline instead of embarrassing himself and the University by talking about his courses (to SI, IIRC).

Glad to see he got his degree.

Lavar Arrington
It's a toss-up for me. Both were men playing among boys. Arrington was a bit more consistent over his two seasons. I'd say Katzenmoyer had the more dominant single season...1996. That was probably the best season I've seen for a college LB and he did it as a freshman. He remained very solid the next two years, but 1996 he was just a force. I'd give a nod to A.J. Hawk, too. His 2005 season was probably the best "all around" season I've seen for an tOSU LB. It always mystified me that he didn't do better as a pro. He had an okay career, but I thought he was gonna be a perennial all-pro.

I was literally scared for Bellisari the year he played in State College.
