Lawn Care - What do you use?

I know I want nothing between me and 4000 rpm blades of death but fiberglass. I hope they reinforced it with Kevlar.

I'm in the midst of restoring a 73 Simplicity. I'll post pics when I'm done with the paint, which is hopefully today.

Kohler power? I spent many an hour on a pretty similar on to the one you're probably talking about at my grandparents...

Now my other Grandfather, and I wish I had a pic of this built his own mower with a 4 cylinder aircooled Wisconsin...

Somthing like this:

$(KGrHqZHJEQE88dE0wP(BPdcZdSgrQ~~60_57.JPG

So, the mower, and I can only describe it was a front deck, front engine, rear steer, 100% homeade with this 30 HP engine on it...had a 3 speed transmission, with 1 reverse speed... and it was 3 on the floor basically... the scale, I guess, was such that the front (drive tires that were right under the motor were probably in the neighborhood of you know like whatever you'd fine on a 1955 Chevy pickup... then the rear steer, oh, yeah, rack and pinion, were more like a small trailer... door knob on the sterring wheel, the whole thing...

But, yeah, it was an awesome peice of equipment, the engine had belt pulleys to use as PTO, but without the sissy PTO hook ups you use today, so, we ran buzz saws and hydraulic log splitters... well, we cut up a lot of damn wood with that thing too... plus you could drag logs with it the mower once you had them limbed... Fun times... I can't remember how many Sunday mornings all I did was freaking cut wood... with the mower.

Not a Kohler, a 10 horse Briggs. Crump's father and I put a Kohler into a 79 Simplicity after throwing a connecting rod. Pretty easy repower, very little welding involved. I'm working on a 3410, if you feel like google searching. I also built a hydrolysis tank to remove rust, which is worthy of pics, just not on this forum:biggrin:

Yeah, that's the one. (Not sure if it was a 10 or 15, maybe 15 was the kohler, I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert)

And it might not have been a '73 right on the money either. (AND, who knows how many engines my Grandfather went through on that thing... )

I kinda want an old simplicity wonder boy, though.

Here's today's progress on the hood. It was beat to death. I drove three hours to get this old girl and paid a mere 150.

Wonder boys are neat tractors. Far cooler than the 1500 dollar plastic junk they sell at Home Depot, Sears, and Tractor Supply. Ron Swanson would be proud.

Nice work... I mean, my yard is justifiably big enough to have a lawn tractor to mow it... I prefer to push mow for a number of reasons, some being exercise, some being that while sizable, its not big flat and open.. and I feel like I can do a better job. But, having said that, sometimes I just wanna knock it out, but I don't need a monster.... Redoing my shed, I think in the early spring, so, probably once that's done... and I have a home for it... I'll start seeing what I can find. Probably ought to start looking in the fall, but, my garage is gonna be full of crap as it is..

Well, I use the roto tiller, snowblower, mowing deck, and plow attachments, as well as towing a dump cart around. It also moves my trailers (boat, snowmobile, utility) without a hiccup. I still push mow certain areas, but far prefer to sit on my ass while doing so. I get plenty of exercise without it.

Full disclosure: I have a different tractor (a 3410, 3414, 3415) with its own implement attached. All told, I have less than a grand in my whole collection, all at least 39 years old. I am 36.

Yeah, I hate to say it (or maybe I don't) that if I had the space for that kind of stuff, I'd have all that stuff.... or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

(See, "redoing my shed" which, if my usual take things to extremes self kicks in, it won't be a reasonable facsimile of a shed when I'm done)

Although for a time, in the late 90's I had winter and summer BMW e30's. Sometimes its just easier that way. (Sorry Muck, Bridgestones on that one too... )

As to the exercise, I'm getting in that, "Get plenty without it" mode these days... plus last week the heat index was like 100... which is hot for an hour and 15 minute job.... that I could break up, but, sometimes you jsut want it over with.

Got horrible crabgrass this year.

Just got some Solitaire I ordered today to kill and going to see if there is any grass left underneath.

May slit seed after the die-off if the grass is shot.

@Thump , how did Tenacity work on your Nimblewill?

In the past, we have had disappointing results with it on Nimblewill. We have found it was easier to remove the sod in those areas, replace the topsoil, and re-seed those areas. More labor intensive, sure, but worked faster and had better results. Would love to have a more reliable spray if there is one out there...

I'll have to check out Solitaire. Crabgrass and Goosegrass have been bad in Central Ohio this year

Tenacity worked great but requires two applications. About 2 weeks apart. Also use a surfactant like methylated seed oil in your mixture.
