Laurinaitis vs. Grant (Starting LB Discussion)

I wholeheartedly agree.

I do as well, especially early in the season. I doubt we'll have any set-in-stone starters at LB for the first few games. Anyone and everyone will have the opportunity in practice to show they deserve a decent crack at some PT, and my guess is at least the 6 mentioned will do so.

However, I hope they settle into starters somewhat quickly. I'm not a huge fan of rotating too many players. Rush end is one thing, but constantly rotating at middle linebacker, for example, seems like it could mess with a defense's continuity.

Isn't Kerr a Mike? I also agree that Laurinaitis knowing the system will get him on the field and keep him on the field before Grant. However, we will know a lot more after the Spring game. If Grant can flat out play then he will be making plays in the Spring game whether he knows the defense or not.

Laurinaitis has it easily. He has more experience to the college level. Schwartz might get some playing time, but he will be redshirted for sure. Plus Marcus Freeman is going to be the other linebacker. I heard that OSU will be no good next year losing 3 good linebackers. That is crap because we have 3 good 1s coming up. OSU should be good this year coming up!

Reloading

1st - tOSU RELOADS! PERIOD! (We all know this)

2nd - Tressel will have his 3 LB starters named before the first game.

My prediction: AII - D'andrea - Freeman
(could be totally wrong but what the hell, its who I would put on the field!)

3rd - Whomever wins their respective starting spot will more than likely only loose it to an injury! not saying that all the LB's won't see time but JT & his staff does a great job preparing the younger guys for the big time games and selecting the pure athlete from the average. Measurables are all we have at this point in time - I don't put much stock into Measurables.

AII vs. Grant

Lil Animal II gets my vote (only because he had some PT last season) and I've seen more of him, but Grant has the ability to show up and knock the shit out of anyone trying to invade his area! (Speed killz!)

No worries! keep up the interesting posts. Looking forward to NLOID and this coming season!
:oh: :io:

The "Grant" we're talking about is Larry Grant, the 5-star JUCO LB, not Grant Scwartz, the incoming ATH. Besides, if he has playing time (Scwartz) he can't redshirt barring injury...

Did you read what osugrad21 had to say about Grant's tackling? Grant will need to work on tackling lower in order to play effectively in the Big Ten. Keep in mind that being a 5-star at JUCO doesn't equate to having two full games experience at SLB against Michigan and Notre Dame, along with a full year in our defensive scheme. Grant has incredible potential, but right now that's all it is--potential.

Laurinaitis has what, 2 career tackles? What makes you think he tackles with any better form than Grant? If you want a guy who can tackle with form look no further than Ross Homan.

I think Homan will start, but if not, then Grant. Laurinaitis has not impressed me yet... probably because he is too small.

1) Have you watched video on Laurinaitis vs Grant before questioning someone else who has (and afterwards had concerns about Grant's technique)?
2) Laurinaitis is written off to third on the depth chart behind two rookies... why? Because he's too small?! The kid is 6'3" 231. He can easily add 10 lbs and be plenty large. You do realize homan is only 6'1 right?

How many I-A career tackles does Grant have?

By the way, Homan is a Mike, not a Sam...oh yeah, how many career I-A tackles does Homan have?

Lastly, I wouldn't consider 6'3", 235 small, especially when that's bigger than both Grant and Homan.

Kaboom.

FWIW, here is what I originally posted:

Watched the films on Rivals...Not overly impressed...he plays high and could get away with that at the JUCO level. Even in his highlight films, there were clips of him giving up solid ground to OL instead of scraping low and cutting the angle. He met the OL head on instead of throwing a flipper. Speed is obvious and he seems to be a solid hitter...but I did not see enough to tell if he is as solid of a tackler. I'm sure some good coaching can rectify these issues, but for the folks on the boards thinking he is going to walk in here and play, I would have to disagree for now. However, speed kills....so you never know.

When I say playing high, I am referencing the way he attacks the blocks. He was giving up way too much frame. There was not enough on the clips to evaluate his tackling...but he does like contact for sure.

homan was not recruited to play the mike at osu.

I went through the first few pages of his 24-page thread and saw that he "projects" as a Will on page 2 and then on page 11 someone posted "MaxEmfinger has RH now the #1 inside backer". If he's projected at Will despite being at Mike in high school, I didn't see that in his thread (I haven't read every post on every recruit).
