I have two problems with that ending scene. After all of the heinous shit he did they tried to make him look like angel because he ran over to the kid to protect them from the bullets. Number two is they were shooting at him, not the kid, he actually put the kid in danger. Also, if anyone deserved to get capped it was O Dog and he escaped unscathed.

It wasn’t meant to be a feel good ending.
Kane was no angel but he did have some decent tendencies. But I think your point is accurate in that it wasn’t smart for him to try to get close to the kid even if he meant to do the right thing at that moment.
O Dog probably would end up in prison for the video tape but yeah he was the really bad guy in the film whereas Kane was just bad but might’ve been redeemable if he got out (but he might not have just as well too and just brought his bs to Atlanta).
