Raiders make Kiffin NFL's youngest head coach

GREG BEACHAM

Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Al Davis has long believed youth is no obstacle to coaching greatness. After all, he was just 33 1/2 years old when he took charge of the Oakland Raiders back in 1963.
And that was more than 12 years before the owner's new choice to lead the Raiders was even born.
Lane Kiffin, Southern California's 31-year-old offensive coordinator, became the NFL's youngest head coach in decades when he accepted Davis' offer to revive the Raiders on Monday night.

Well as much as I hate the Raiders I hope this at least makes them somewhat competitive again. The AFC west really isn't as much fun when the Raiders are the whipping-boy of the division.

i guess every highschool football coach in America said no?

Kiffin was turned down by Minnesota...The University of Minnesota...:p

Kidding aside. I don't have an opinion one way or the other about the Raiders, but for a franchise with as much tradition and history as they have to be this low, is amazing...

Yeah, Since Gruden who would have thought that they wouldn't be able to beg a head coach to take over. It's not like Al won't spend the money, it's apparently that he just wants too much control over what the team does.

Oh well, they will be good again, part of me hates that they suck so much because I want the Chargers to beat a good Raiders team. And then, another part of me just laughs "how the mighty have fallen"

Anyone think this will affect any USC recruits? I doubt it myself.

Highly doubtful, I am more wondering how it will effect the play calling as a whole. Norm Chow left and they were still a very strong team. I wouldn't worry, with the success they have had over the past 5 years they won't have any recruiting problems, assuming that next year Petey doesn't decide to make another run at the NFL.

(sorry, I am all out of raiders suck clip art :()

Why does it seem like all these "no name" coaches have been signing as head coaches the past couple of years..Mike McCarthy with the Packers last year, Cam Cameron with the Doplhins, Bobby Petrino with the Falcons (I know he was Louisville but no NFL experience), and now Mike Tomlin with the Steelers. No names taking over the league!! :wink2:

I guess we can add Lane Kiffin to that list now.
