Dryden;2252585; said:Again, I think the 'catchability' thing is overstated when you're throwing to Marquis Lee and Robert Woods. Teams have deflated balls for half a century because they can kick it further.
Andre Heidari had 76 KOs last season with 10 touchbacks. He only has 23 KOs this season but with 11 touchbacks. Craig McMahon, a RS So., is also handling KOs this season and has piled up 11 touchbacks on 23 KOs. So as a team, USC is using two different kickers for KOs and have 28 TBs on 60 kicks; avg distance 61.1 yards.
USC's opponents have only 13 TBs on 43 KOs, and Marquis Lee is one of the top return men in the game as a result.
Consider the KO yards in the game Saturday:
D. Thomas 3 returns, 68 yards
M. Lee 8 returns, 251 yards
USC didn't just start underinflating balls to 10.5(ish) psi this past weekend to make them more catchable. They've been deflating footballs all year to increase their touchback rate from 15% last season to nearly 50% this season while piling up a substantial advantage over their opponents in the return game.
USC has good kickers and return men, but they are not that much better than everybody else they're playing.
I agree with that, but USC's gains this year don't seem to correlate with other teams' gains.Bucky Katt;2252589; said:That could have something to do with moving the kickoffs from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line, too.

So it's just a big social experiment? The elephant in the room is that USC was trying to see if they could beat another team by only kicking field goals.
