Lakota West starts season in top spot
North College Hill No. 1, too

The telephone rang, and Lakota West coach Mike Mueller was fully prepared with quips and quotes.

"You've got bad news, right?" Mueller said. "You're going to tell me we're No. 1, and that puts the target right on us."

Yes.

Mueller's Firebirds are No. 1 in The Enquirer Division I preseason area coaches' poll, with four starters back from a team that went 19-4 and reached the district finals.

North College Hill, to no one's shock, again is ranked No. 1 in Divisions II-IV. O.J. Mayo, Ohio Mr. Basketball as a sophomore, returns to lead the Trojans' Division III state title defense.

In Division I, Moeller and St. Xavier are ranked Nos. 2-3 after both reached the state Final Four last season. (St. X was state runner-up). Reigning Enquirer Division I poll champ Lakota East is No. 4, and La Salle is No. 5.

Lakota West is led by 6-foot-8 senior Josh Chichester, who has committed to play both football and basketball for Ohio State. Chichester averaged 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds last season.

West's Mueller is used to the No. 1 role. He won a state title in 1992 when Lakota was still one high school, and last season's team briefly was ranked No. 1 locally.

"We went out and lost our next game, as you recall," Mueller said. "I think this is another year where several teams are competing for the top spot."
It probably won't be that way in Divisions II-IV, where NCH's Mayo, Bill Walker and Keenan Ellis all are ranked among the nation's top 50 juniors by Scout.com. NCH, rated No. 6 nationally by USA Today, will play five-time USA Today poll champion Oak Hill Academy (Va.) and local powers St. X and La Salle, among others.

"Our kids look forward to the challenges," NCH coach Jamie Mahaffey said. "Every night, everybody is going to bring their championship game to us."
Wyoming is No. 2 in Divisions II-IVl. Taft, which lost by only seven points to NCH last year, returns much of its roster and is No. 3.

Chichester leads No. 1 Firebirds
Center scores 19 points in victory

Mike Mueller turned to his bench with his team ahead by 21 midway through the fourth quarter at Oak Hills Wednesday night. He asked nobody in particular, "How do you win here by 21 and still feel like you didn't play that well?"

Mueller knows as well as anybody, because the Firebirds used his time-honored formula. They outrebounded the Highlanders by 14 and limited them to 30.2 percent shooting while getting a game-high 19 points from senior center Josh Chichester in a 55-31 win.

"It's the formula I've been preaching for 35 years - defense, rebounding, teamwork," said Mueller, whose team is ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer Division I coaches' poll. "... We played awfully good on defense."

The Firebirds, picked by Greater Miami Conference coaches to win the league this season, improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the GMC. Oak Hills, picked to finish second, fell to 3-2 and 2-1.

"If I could explain it, I would," Oak Hills coach Mike Price said. "I have a lot of faith in these guys. I know they'll bounce back. Our last three games, I thought we played really well. Maybe there was just too much pressure."

The 6-foot-8 Chichester, who has signed with Ohio State for football, also led both teams with six rebounds and added three blocked shots, two steals and two assists.

His Highlanders counterpart, 6-9 Akron-bound Mike Bardo, led the Highlanders with 11 points.

"He's capable of doing the same things I do," Chichester said. "He had a little more power than me. Playing guys like that brings out more in me - and I thank him for it."

Lakota West led from the beginning, when Matt Karaffa grabbed the opening tip from Chichester and drove in for a layup four seconds into the game.

The Highlanders committed seven turnovers during a 15-1 Firebird run to open the second quarter. Todd Mayberry sparked the run with a tip-in and a 3-pointer.

Oak Hills, which didn't hit its first field goal until Steve Pogue scored on a layup with 2:23 left in the first quarter, didn't sink a shot from the field in the second quarter until Justin Steigerwald made a 3-pointer with 2:50 left to cut Lakota West's lead to 25-9.

Lakota West shot 52.4 percent while opening up a 25-11 halftime lead. Oak Hills shot just 23.5 percent in the half.

Lakota West (5-0, 4-0) - Casper 2 1 5, Mayberry 2 1 6, Karaffa 5 0 11, Chichester 8 3 19, Gschwind 0 2 2, Schloemer 4 0 8, Kaufman 2 0 4. Totals: 21 7 55.

Mayberry spurs West defense
Helps force East star into 10-of-29 shooting night

A couple of years have passed since Todd Mayberry transferred from Lakota East to Lakota West, but try as he might, he still can't help getting up a little more when playing against his former team.

That edge showed up Wednesday night on the 6-foot-5 senior's defensive effort against Thunderhawks star James Dews. Mayberry was the point man on a Firebirds defense that harassed the 6-4 Dews into a 10-for-29 shooting night as the Firebirds beat their neighborhood rivals 54-42 at West.

"It's a big game in the community, but it's probably bigger for me," said Mayberry, who was 1-for-6 both from the field and from the free-throw line and scored three points.

Said Lakota West coach Mike Mueller: "Todd was all over him. We decided nobody can stop James Dews, but we thought Todd's size gave him an advantage."

Dews scored a game-high 23 points - six fewer than his average - as the Thunderhawks (5-4, 4-1 Greater Miami Conference) suffered a third consecutive loss and fell out of a tie with the Firebirds (9-1, 5-0) for first place in the GMC.

Lakota West is ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll. East is No. 8.

Senior Josh Chichester scored 13 points to lead a balanced Lakota West attack that included J.C. Casper with 12 points and Brad Gschwind scoring 11 off the bench.

Lakota West made five of its first six shots while never trailing and opening up a 13-2 lead. Dews cut the margin to 13-10 with a personal 8-0 run to end the first quarter, but the Firebirds rebuilt the lead to 11 by halftime.

They led 44-30 after Mayberry knocked the ball from a Thunderhawks player and then took the return pass in for a dunk with 5:58 left in the game.

"I've probably played against (Dews) more than the other guys, in pickup games and whatever," Mayberry said. "He's a good player, and he's going to get his points."

Dews wasn't the only Lakota East player to struggle with shooting. The Thunderhawks missed 15 of 20 shots in the first half and were 17-of-52 (32.7 percent) for the game, getting points from just four players.

Lakota East coach Wally Vickers couldn't blame any gimmick Firebird defenses for the Thunderhawks' shooting problems.

"When these two teams play, there are no secrets," Vickers said. "They know what we do, and we know what they do."

Said Mueller: "Dews and (East senior) Casey Kjos gave the ultimate effort. They both played the entire game, but I think our depth and teamwork paid off."

Lakota East (5-4, 4-1 GMC) - Pashi 0 2 2, Smith 3 0 6, Dews 10 0 23, Kjos 4 3 11. Totals: 17 5 42.

Not much ado about Firebirds

Division I No. 1 overshadowed by NCH, Mayo

Mike Mueller's Lakota West boys' basketball team might be the least publicized No. 1-ranked team in Cincinnati-area history.

Mueller could not be more pleased, and he happily broached the subject this week.

"We realize North College Hill is the No. 1 team in Cincinnati basketball," Mueller said. "That's the reality, and I'm OK with that. In a normal year, I'd be dreading being No. 1."

Lakota West (9-1, 5-0 Greater Miami Conference) has been No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I poll all season. The Firebirds host Sycamore (6-2, 3-2) tonight.

Lakota West quietly has done its thing while O.J. Mayo, Bill Walker and Keenan Ellis have led the North College Hill Trojans to a No. 2 national rating by USA Today.

"They're the new wave, and we're old-school," Mueller said. "I don't want that to come out wrong, but our kids all came up together in this program. I've got no problem with how NCH has done it, I'm just saying that this way has worked for us."

Mueller has been a head coach for 35 years, including the past 20 in the Lakota district. He has a 547-265 career record, including the 1992 Ohio Division I title at Lakota. The state title came five years before Lakota divided into East and West.

Lakota West has flourished with Mueller's usual formula of team ball and fundamentals, with emphasis on ballhandling, passing, footwork and defense. Several players average in or near double-figure scoring.

Josh Chichester, West's athletic 6-foot-8, 210-pound senior forward, is the star. Chichester has been Enquirer all-area in both football (wide receiver) and basketball, and he will sign a football letter with Ohio State on Feb. 1. He also will play basketball for the Buckeyes.

Chichester leads West with a 14.4-point scoring average, and he also averages 7.7 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 1.8 steals a game.

West's second-leading scorer has been 6-7 junior Robby Schloemer, who has averaged 10 points off the bench. Matt Karaffa, Todd Mayberry, J.C. Casper, Vince Cook and Brad Gschwind all have had double-figure scoring games.

Chichester said Division I teams are targeting Lakota West and its No. 1 area rank.

"I think teams bring their 'A' game for us," Chichester said. "That's good, because it gets us up for every game."

Chichester, a former AAU teammate of Mayo, Walker and Co., doesn't begrudge NCH its stature.

"They won state last year, so they've earned it," he said. "We've got our own goals, like we want to win our own state title. First, we want to start by winning the league."

Sycamore is among those in the way. The Aviators have two of the area's top players in 6-4 senior David Buchberger (18.9 ppg) and 6-7 senior Robby Peters (17.9 ppg).

"Our kids understand this is a big opportunity, playing Lakota West," Sycamore coach Stan Kaniecki said. "If you want to get respect in the league and the city, we've got to beat somebody we're not supposed to beat. West isn't No. 1 in the city for no reason."

Kaniecki is in his first year as head coach.

The Aviators this season seek their first win over a top-10 area team and come off a 60-41 loss to No. 9 Lakota East last Saturday.

"We kind of hit a block the other night against East, where we didn't shoot well and didn't match their intensity," Kaniecki said. "Overall I've been pleased with our effort. We've got a good group of seniors, and we know what's at stake against a team like West."

Lakota West has been ranked No. 1 all season in the Enquirer Division I boys' basketball poll. Sycamore, one of the area's surprises, was unranked in the preseason but cracked the top 10 (tied for ninth) a few weeks ago.
