Women's basketball: Mason-Cox gives Buckeyes depth

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 3:30 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The box score numbers weren't exceptional. Lesslee Mason-Cox had four points and four rebounds in 11 minutes Sunday for Ohio State in its 63-57 women's basketball victory over Marist.
The numbers and the game action, however, marked significant milestones on two fronts for Mason-Cox because she hadn't played for the Buckeyes since academic troubles halted her freshman season in December.
Eleven months later, she has learned to balance books and basketball well enough to be back in the playing rotation for a game tonight against Tennessee State in Value City Arena.

OSU women's basketball preview

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
TENNESSEE STATE AT OHIO STATE

7 TONIGHT
? Where: Value City Arena
? Records: Ohio State 1-0,
Tennessee State 0-0
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Key matchup: The Buckeyes would like to run more in this game than they did in their opening win against a veteran Marist team that dictated the pace in the second half. Look for the OSU guards to pressure the ball and for the inside players, especially center Jantel Lavender, to hit the boards and look for the outlet pass. If the Buckeyes are going to run, they might as well start tonight.

Women's basketball: Two players sign with Buckeyes

Thursday, November 15, 2007 3:52 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Coach Jim Foster took two more steps toward changing the look and style of play of the Ohio State women's basketball team yesterday by signing two guards to national letters of intent.
Amber Stokes, a 5-foot-10 senior at Gahanna High School and the daughter for former OSU men's basketball captain Ronnie Stokes, and Samantha Prahalis, a 5-7 senior at Commack (N.Y.) High School, fit Foster's desire to field a running team.
"They are both very athletic, quick and explosive players," Foster said. "They have different skills sets."
Prahalis is a point guard whose passing skills have wowed crowds.
"Sam has got some stuff in her game," Foster said. "She's fun to watch. I think she's going to be fun to play with. If you run the floor, she's going to find you. She's got the gift. I think fans are going to love the way she plays."

OSU vs. Boston U. game preview

Saturday, November 17, 2007 3:29 AM

4 P.M.TODAY
? Where: Agganis Arena, Boston
? Records: Ohio State is 2-0; Boston University is 2-0.
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Key matchup: Boston University wants to play a half-court game and will attempt to establish a slower tempo with its zone defense. Ohio State would rather run. If Marscilla Packer and Ashlee Trebilcock can hit from the outside early to rattle the zone and Shavelle Little can pressure the Terriers guards, the transition game should open up.

Jantel Lavender Named Big Ten Player of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State freshman center Jantel Lavender has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week in recognition of her performance in wins over Tennessee State and Boston University last week. She averaged 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the free throw line and 52 percent from the field.
Lavender is the first Ohio State freshman to receive Big Ten Player of the Week honors since Katie Smith during the 1992-93 season.
In the win over Tennessee State Nov. 14, Lavender dominated, scoring 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting with five boards and three blocks -- in only 22 minutes. She scored 12 points in the first eight minutes as the Buckeyes opened up a comfortable 19-0 lead.
Then in the win at Boston University Saturday, Lavender recorded 21 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and drained all nine of her free throw attempts as Ohio State held off BU 83-68.
The Cleveland Central Catholic native is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring (19.0 ppg) and fifth in rebounding (8.7 rpg). She is shooting 50 percent from the field and an impressive 88.2 percent (15-of-17) from the line.
In her first collegiate game against Marist Nov. 11, she recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Women's basketball
Tougher foes loom for young Buckeyes

Saturday, November 24, 2007 6:48 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Three seasons have passed since Ohio State women's basketball coach Jim Foster has fielded a team as young as the one that will take the court today against Colgate in the first round of the Buckeye Classic.
The Raiders (0-3) don't figure to have any better chance of derailing the 15th-ranked Buckeyes (4-0) than an overmatched Southern University did Monday in a 41-point loss.
The schedule, to date, wasn't an accident. A probable encounter with Auburn, if the 24th-ranked Tigers (4-0) don't stumble against Winston-Salem (0-2) in the Classic opener, also is on purpose.
Young teams need to experience growing pains, and Auburn, a member of the powerful Southeastern Conference, has the ability to leave a bruise or two on anyone.

OSU-Colgate game preview

Saturday, November 24, 2007 6:48 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
OHIO STATE VS. COLGATE

2 P.M. TODAY
? Where: St. John Arena
? What: Buckeye Classic (Auburn vs. Winston-Salem in noon game)
? Records: Ohio State 4-0;
Colgate 0-3
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Key matchup: The Buckeyes have too much athleticism for the Raiders. Auburn, likewise, is a prohibitive favorite over Winston-Salem. OSU needs to play against the game and not the scoreboard. This means a better floor game and fewer turnovers than have marked the first four games. Unforced errors figure to begin taking a toll as soon as Sunday.
