Old Mike, new Christine

By Mike Penner, Times Staff Writer
April 26, 2007

During my 23 years with The Times' sports department, I have held a wide variety of roles and titles. Tennis writer. Angels beat reporter. Olympics writer. Essayist. Sports media critic. NFL columnist. Recent keeper of the Morning Briefing flame.

Today I leave for a few weeks' vacation, and when I return, I will come back in yet another incarnation.

As Christine.

I am a transsexual sportswriter. It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy for me to work up the courage to type those words. I realize many readers and colleagues and friends will be shocked to read them.

I know it will seem incredibly politically-incorrect but really what a douchebag. :slappy:

I am in tears here but not about what you think. The psychobabble about brains being "wired" before birth, the crap about playing in the rec soccer league, the coaching of little league soccer and then the final moment of the sale: this could be the start of a wonderful relationship.

Just who in the hell do reporters think they are? What gives them the laughable notion that they are so important in our lives to warrant a relationship? Damn, that is funny. I keep thinking of the shock that Trev Alberts must have felt two weeks after he left the scene at ESPiN and nobody called. Nobody cared.

You're a local sports writer for a newspaper, not a movie star! If cutting off your manhood and wearing pumps and party dresses is the only way that you can get through the day, then with all due respect do it pal. I mean that with all sincerity. I would hate to get up in the morning and suffer those tortured feelings.

Just don't expect me to keep a straight face when you extrapolate that into us having some kind of new relationship. And don't feel bad, I didn't rush in to comfort Jennifer Aniston when Brad left either!
