Fredrick Douglass Head Coach Nathan McPeek Breaks Down Jager Burton's Game and Leadership
Following his freshman football season at Lexington Christian High School, four-star offensive guard Jager Burton decided to transfer to Fredrick Douglass High School, which was in its second year of existence.
At the time Burton arrived at Douglass, Nathan McPeek had just finished his first year as the offensive line coach for the Broncos. Now almost three years later, Burton is one of the best college prospects in Kentucky, with offers from the like of Kentucky, Oregon, Clemson, Alabama, and Ohio State. And as for McPeek, he was just named the Broncos’ head football coach this winter after former head coach Brian Landis left to become the linebackers coach at Georgia State.
Both have grown together as people while inside the Douglass program and Burton has become the model of what McPeek looks for when it comes to players in the Douglass program.
“He [Burton] is just a really good person, he brings a lot of our core values to light,” McPeek said. “With his accountability, character, honesty, and discipline, those are our four core values and he lives those every day. He also comes from a really good family.”
Burton’s play speaks for itself, but so does his personality. Since taking over as the head football coach at Ohio State, Ryan Day has worked hard to recruit and land high-character people along with talented players. Based on what his coach has had to say about him, clearly Burton has the high character Day and his staff are looking for in future Buckeyes.
Of course, another key part of Day and his staff’s evaluation is making sure that anyone they bring in can play big-time college football during their career in the scarlet and gray. Seeing as McPeek has seen Burton grow throughout most of the high school years there is no one better to talk about his on-field play.
“He has started to develop that nasty streak you need to be a top-echelon offensive lineman,” McPeek said. “Obviously, he is offered by all the topic programs in the country because of his athletic ability. He can bend with his knees and has really good feet. When he was growing up as a young kid he was a skilled position guy so he has really good feet and runs really well.
“But there are still a lot of things that we have to work on this year as a senior that he can get better at. Just little things like footwork, hand placement, drive and finish, and I know those will continue as he continues to grow in his body and in the weight room consistently. I think his best football is ahead of him.”
