Report: Keith Jackson says he's done broadcasting games
April 27, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Keith Jackson thinks this is the right time for him to retire.

Jackson, widely regarded as the voice of college football, has decided to stop broadcasting games, The New York Times reported Thursday.

"I'm finished with play-by-play forever," he told the newspaper.

Jackson spent some 40 years calling the action in a folksy, down-to-earth manner that made him one of the most popular play-by-play personalities in the business.

He also announced he would retire after the 1998 season, but ended up continuing with ABC Sports. He said this time is different.

"This is the perfect time," Jackson told the newspaper. "I don't want to get back into the pressure cooker of play-by-play and worry about travel. I don't want to die in a stadium parking lot."

Jackson, 77, began calling college football games with ABC in 1966. He also worked NBA, NFL games and the Olympics, but was always best known for college football.

An ABC Sports executive said they tried to keep Jackson, but respect his decision.

I was a supporter of this guy up until last year...he's just going down more and more every week. The best thing about Fox getting the BCS is that it meant no Keith Jackson (of course the worst thing is that Fox's sports coverage is terrible and they'll show more stars "randomly" in attendance than ABC ever thought possible)

Hope he enjoys his retirement, too bad Fouts isn't going with him

I always thought he was a entertaining guy when calling games. But he has just got too old for it. He was really slipping in the last few years.

Interesting, I did not know that he called NBA games and the Olympics. NFL games, that really doesn't surprise me, being football. But I didn't see him as a basketball guy.

If I'm not mistaken, he also worked an Indy 500 or two.

iirc, he called some of Barney Oldfield's greatest races.
