Wash me
I have written, only to erase and not submit, numerous posts regarding Katrina. Regarding New Orleans, regarding the people, regarding our prayers, regarding the mahem, regarding the governments: federal, state, and local.

There is just nothing worth saying.

Not now.

We need a new thread. (So mods please don't delete this one.) If you feel for Bucknola post here. If you feel for all of NOLA post here. If you are pissed post here. If you want to say/do something, post here. But post here only after you have something to contribute.

We can discuss everything for months. We can contribute now.

Please post information regarding the organizations with which you have spoken and/or donated. It's time for Buckeyeplanet to coordinate.

I just cancelled an upcoming vacation to instead go to New Orleans and help. I am sure I will feel better about a week of helping others than a week in Tokyo or wherever. Still, realistically, after speaking with the American Red Cross, my wife and I may do more good by giving money than time. So cancel a vacation. Give the money you would have spent to those who desperately need it. Take a week off work and bask in the solace of having helped. They will take your time, but most organizations prefer those with a lot of time to give. They will train you in a specific task and then deploy you. If you only have time, then donate that. I told them I don’t have time to learn much, but that I can pick something up, carry it, and put it down. They need that too.

This will go on for months, maybe a year. You can help in 2006. They’ll still need people. Now is the worst time to try to help on your own. Don't drive down there to help. It will be chaotic for a long time. Call a charity and they'll tell you when they need you.

I am researching places to donate—time and money. Below are links to what I have, but please post better ones—organizations with whom you have spoken and about which you have learned. Let’s get some Buckeyes on this matter—there are enough of us, and we are the best. We can have a huge impact.

I have not investigated all of the links. Please do so! If you are not religious (I’m not) still look at the religious charities. If you want someone driven to do good and help no matter what the obstacles, I can’t think of a better community than the faithful.

(Finally, though it sounds stupid to say, donate a dollar. Donate two or five dollars. If you have nothing to give, then do that. It still helps - a lot.)

Great post. I was going to ask the mods last night to allow a separate thread so those who wish to donate do not get lost in the bigger hurricane thread.

I am going to go to my local Lowe's store today and drop off a donation. I am choosing that route simply because Lowe's is matching in store donations up to $1 million. I'm fortunate enough I have a house to work on this weekend so I figure while I am picking up some supplies I can at least make a small donation.

"Company to Match Customer Contributions up to $1 Million

In response to Hurricane Charley and Tropical Storm Bonnie, Lowe's and the American Red Cross are working together to help communities recover with on-the- ground support, and by activating Lowe's in-store customer donation program to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. All Lowe's stores on the Gulf and East Coasts will serve as official cash donation sites for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Lowe's will match customer donations dollar-for-dollar up to $1 million dollars."

Great Post Kinch... have an award.

There's a local sports talk show host that is donating a dollar for every caller he gets in September and there are several Corporations that are matching it... I will be calling in as much as I can. But seriously... great post and I hope there are tons of people out there with the same idea as yours.

For those who are still in college, check to see what is occurring on your campus. I know there are some posts on here about what Ohio State is doing. Kent State is collecting money for relief aid today.

I just donated $100 to the Red Cross through the Yahoo homepage.

It only takes about 2 minutes.

I hope that everyone can find it in their hearts to donate as much as you can. They have $25 increments of donations.

We just made it back from running a bunch of errands, which included a stop at Lowe's. You can make any size donation or $5 or $10 donations. The lady asked me twice when I told her the amount. It wasn't large, just larger than what they had listed. Your purchase receipt then acts as your receipt for tax purposes. Very quick and very simple.

I hope the best for you NOLA...

<big><b><big><big>Footprints</big></big></b></big> <big><big> </big>

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was
</big><b><big>walking along the beach with the LORD. Across </big><big>the sky flashed scenes of his life. For each scene, </big><big>he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one </big><big>belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.</big></b>
<b>
<big> </big><small> </small><big>
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, </big><big>be looked back at the footprints in the sand. He </big><big>noticed that many times along the path of his life </big><big>there was only one set of footprints. He also </big><big>noticed that it happened at the very lowest and </big><big>saddest times of his life.</big>

<big> </big><small>
</small><big>This really bothered him and he questioned the </big><big>LORD about it. "LORD, you said that once I </big><big>decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the </big><big>way. But I have noticed that during the most </big><big>troublesome times in my life, there is only one set </big><big>of footprints; I don't understand why when I </big><big>needed you most you would leave me."</big>

<big>
The LORD replied, "My precious, precious child, </big><big>I love you and I would never leave you. During </big><big>your times of trial and suffering, when you see </big><big>only one set of footprints, it was then that I </big><big>carried you."</big>
