K Jayden Fielding (All B1G, National Champion)

I'm not going to crush the kid - unlike about 60% of the non-BP Buckeye fanbase, I don't get my jollies screeching about kickers.

Literally no one in the locker room feels worse about it than he does.

I do have some concerns about 'staying with your guy' too long but that's a Ryan Day problem, not a Jayden Fielding problem. There's putting people in a position to succeed or fail, and then there's trotting a guy out who has shown a propensity for not getting the job done. Everyone has their ceiling and their limitations, and it's ENTIRELY on the coaches to find them, understand what they are, and do what's best for the PROGRAM and the PLAYER.

I fully believe he’s the best we got. That just can’t be the case here at OSU.

Look what the kid from Ole Miss does. How elite is that to be automatic from 50 yards or greater? With our defenses we just need points. Sure would’ve been a month ago and couldn’t have hurt 2 days ago.

Could you imagine knowing that if you can just approach midfield you’re getting points? That’s nuts

There’s “the best you got” in practice, which it sounds like he consistently wins.

And then there’s “the best you got” in clutch moments.

I think we all concede he’s a talented kicker in non-clutch moments. MaCafe, who is big on kickers, had great things to say about him from camps he’d been too (big leg for smaller size kicker)….

All that said, the sample size is large enough to know he’s not it. We brought in a transfer portal kicker from the MAC, and he didn’t get any run in-game presumably bc Fielding “out-kicked” him in practice.

I don’t now, at a certain point, don’t you have to make a change?? You can never truly replicate in-game situations on the practice field.

No point in “crushing” him or anything.

The fact of the matter is he isn’t good enough to be kicking here and Day’s refusal to address the kicking game has cost us dearly for years, and a lot of “what-ifs.” That’s really all that needs to be said.

It needs to be a priority this offseason and, nothing personal, Fielding cannot kick another game at OSU. (I have no clue his eligibility or if this was already a foregone conclusion and I also do not care)

I trust that that will be the case.

Oh I agree with you. You can’t put Fielding back out there to hit kicks when it matters. I’m shocked he hit that kick at the end to get the natty (almost missed that btw).

At this point you have to go get a kicker who has shown the ability to hit from 40+ in a game consistently. Then who cares what practice looks like because Fielding being good in practice doesn’t help when you need a game tying 27 yard field goal.

100% this sums it up perfectly. People don't get to keep their jobs just because they are nice, in the real world or even within other positions on the team. At this point it feels like a deliberate choice by the coaching staff - driven by whatever "philosophy" - to not maximize talent and production on special teams.

Fielding has leg strength for days.
It's his precision that suffers under stress.

When I sae he was coming back after the championship run last year, I was disappointed.
It all stemmed from the day he kicked the ball OOB three times in a game. I recall that the camera showed Day asking him what was going on and it looked as though Fielding was blame the sun/environment. If you can't own that you're not well (as it was hip flexors or something) then I don't know how you're trusted when you're really needed.
Wisb Jayden well in his future endeavors. Imagine it won't be in kicking much longer.

I’m pulling for the kid - never want to see anyone fail. But this stat is pretty alarming

That doesn‘t even mention that in a tie CFP game with 9 seconds left, Carneiro’s 47-yard attempt hit the top of the circle in the middle of the net with the Allstate logo, and would have been good from 60 yards.
