Dan Stultz, a 1996 Orrville High School grad, played on the football and track teams for four years and basketball team for two years.

He was a two time first team All-Ohio place-kicker and was also a punter for the Red Riders. Stultz played on teams that went to the state title game in 1994 and state semifinals in 1995. He also played in the North-South All-Star game and played in the Big 33 All-Star game.

Following graduation, he earned a scholarship to Ohio State where he played football from 1996-2000 where he had 50 consecutive starts as a Buckeye. He played in the Rose Bowl in 1997; Sugar Bowl, 1998 and 1999, Outback Bowl, 2001 and Hula Bowl (All-Star game), 2001. He was the third all-time leading scorer (341 points) in school history behind Pete Johnson and Mike Nugent.

At OSU, Stultz was named first-team All-Big Ten in 2000, and with a 55-yard field goal has the longest in the history of Ohio Stadium. He was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week three times and had game-winning field goals against Minnesota (38 yards) in 1999 and Illinois (34 yards) in 2000.

My favorite game-day memory is when I ran through the tunnel of pride for the first time. To see so many great Buckeyes from years and years of fantastic tradition, rooting us on and getting us fired up for the biggest game of the year. WOW!

My favorite game-day tradition is watching the band march onto the field. I actually didn?t have the chance to experience the band marching out onto the field until after my career was over. Now, after being a fan and a former player for six years, I can honestly say it give me chills every time.

Stultz got a kick out of winning field goals

As Baltimore kicker Steve Hauschka lined up a last-second field-goal attempt in the Metrodome last week -- a 44-yard kick that would have given the visiting Ravens a one-point win over the Minnesota Vikings -- one TV viewer felt like he was down on the field with Hauschka.

Except that where Hauschka missed, Dan Stultz made.

"It was bringing back all those memories," said Stultz, the former Ohio State kicker who in 1999 kicked a 40-yard field goal with 1:15 remaining to allow the Buckeyes to escape with a 20-17 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Metrodome. "I was watching the Vikings game, and that dude for Baltimore missed at the same end where I made mine."

Late game-winning field goals are something of a rarity in the long history of Ohio State football. The Buckeyes, being the better team most weeks, tend to avoid close calls. If anything, it is the off-target field goal that stands out, including three fourth-quarter misses by Michigan kicker Mike Lantry in the 1973 and '74 games. There also was the 62-yard attempt by Tom Skladany in the waning moments of the 1975 Rose Bowl that came up just short, allowing Southern California to hold on for an 18-17 win.

But the Buckeyes have won with kicks, too. And Stultz had two of them, including the clincher in Minneapolis.

Kicking a football was Stultz's specialty

Dan Stultz was an all-around athlete who lettered in both basketball and track at Orrville High, but the 1995 OHS graduate made his biggest impact when his right foot met the football. Stultz is one of a long line of outstanding place-kickers who have played for the Red Riders. He's also the most accomplished, in both his high school and college careers.

Stultz lettered twice with both the track and basketball teams at Orrville. In football, he lettered four times, then went on to play in both the Ohio North-South and Big 33 football games following his senior season.

When he graduated, he held just about every kicking record, including most career field goals, most field goals in a season, and the longest FG in school history, a 53-yarder against Mansfield Madison in 1993. Stultz also had field goals of 52 and 48 yards (twice). His 43-yarder in the 1994 state title game was also the longest ever, and he was named first-team All-Ohio as both a junior and senior.

Stultz then became a four-year fixture at Ohio State, where he appeared in 50 consecutive games in earning four letters for the Buckeyes and played in four bowl games -- the 1997 Rose Bowl, the 1998 and '99 Sugar Bowls, and the Outback Bowl -- and also appeared in the 2001 Hula Bowl.

He could kick with the pressure on, too, with two game-winning kicks for the Buckeyes -- beating Minnesota with a 38-yarder and Illinois with a 34-yarder. His 55-yard three-pointer is the longest in the history of Ohio Stadium. A three-time Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, Stultz was a first-team All-Big Ten pick in 2000.

Upon graduation from OSU, Stultz, with 341 points, was No. 2 on the school's all-time scoring list behind 1970s fullback Pete Johnson (348). He's currently No. 3, as kicker Mike Nugent ascended to the top of the list several years ago.

Now a resident of Columbus, Stultz is a manufacturer's representative in the plumbing business. And, for those who doubted his ability on the big stage, he's also remembered at Orrville High for performing in a lead role in two plays -- "A Few Good Men" and "South Pacific."

Stultz and his wife Stacy have a son, Liam, nearing his first birthday.
