Just did a phone job interview...

Dude, it sounds like you're only considering this because you want out of your town so bad. If you haven't already done so, I suggest putting some serious effort into finding another job you like that is anywhere but where you are. I can understand your motivation, but moving into a career you think you suck at, that you will probably hate, and moving into a state that I think you would hate anyways, just to get away from your hometown doesn't sound like the right motivation for me. And that was one hell of a run-on sentence. Don't do it. Find something else, somewhere else.

LoKy is right with one exception. Teachers can be good salesman, I have seen it happen many times.
I would agree with almost everyone here, if you do not feel comfortable selling do not do it. You must be able to sell somewhat to get through the phone interview in which you sold yourself.

Is it a full time sales position or a technical sales engineer? In the latter case you may be helping sales make sure they recommend the correct solution. You would still have to make calls and be face to face with prospects and customers.

I am also in the minority but I like Tejas a lot. One good thing about working there is if you fail in one job there are hundreds of thousands of others in the same location. Can you say that about your current location?

Could you be a little more specific on what you do with computers besides post on BP all day?:)

do something youre good and passionate about, this will lead to being happy ive found. from the sounds of it youre only two pluses are leaving sayre and some more $. neither of those are legit reasons to me to do something you dont think youll like and something you arent good at. either way good luck and let us know.

If you're willing to take a big risk, please don't make it one that involves living somewhere you don't want to live and doing something you don't want to do. Life is too short.

Besides, of all the jobs in the world, what are the odds that the best one for you is waiting through the doors that are easiest to open? If you're going to change everything, take the bigger risk and go after what you really want.

I like the two columns idea a lot, mainly because I use a similar approach when considering a career move.

You said you are NOT a saleperson, but have you ever really tried it? I could not see myself selling, but I know someone whose job basically requires him to be a salesman and he was a chemist before that. His employer provided all the training and tools necessary to make him successful and that is what he has done.

If the columns look even and they are willing to give you the support you need you may want to take a shot. No matter what you do just be comfortable with the decision so you are not looking back 10 years from now wondering "what if" you had taken that sales job.

Finally, I would guess your resume shows you do not have the sales experience. The company is probably either giving you a courtesy interview or thinks you can do the job. Let's hope it is the latter.

If you do decide to take the job, (if offered), I would recommend being very careful about what area you move to. I took a job in New Jersey a few years ago and have done nothing but work 80-100 hour weeks in a field pretty close to what you are describing. The rewards that come with promotion are nice but be careful what you wish for when talking about moving out of your home town.

I'm not sure how old you are, but I say if your under 30 give it a try. There is nothing worse than regret.
In my opinion sales are not that hard. There are two kinds of successful salespeople. 1) is the natural 2) Is the Hard worker. You might not be the first, but theres no reason you can't be the second. Every month I watch are leading salesperson just beat people into submission. We joke all the time about how he wears people down.
All in all if you decide to take this job I wish you the best of luck. Just remember to avoid awkward pauses, and be relentless.
