Be water my friend.
On the way home tonight, I heard the news about Lydell Ross on the radio, and I shook my head in disgust. I had all the thoughts that everyone else had. The team is out of control, the O line sucks, this is Ohio State and they are becoming a laughing stock of college football. All the old stand bys.
When I got home I went through the routine of dinner and cleaning up. Played with my 2 year old and hung out with the wife. Getting ready for the weekend. I went out to the garage and got the Ohio State banner that I hang outside every Friday night through Sunday night during football season. I unrolled the banner and my mind started wandering back to all the years of Ohio State football that I've enjoyed for my whole life.
As I hung the banner, I thought about the players and teams that I've rooted for: Chris Spielman, Bob Maggs, Robert Smith, Dan Wilkeson, Bobby Olive, Bobby Hoying, Tim Anderson, Matt Wilhelm, Justin Zwick. The 2002 team, the 2003 team, the teams in the 90's that broke my heart, but that I always came back to. The list goes on and on. I thought about the games that I watched with my dad and the games I will watch with my own family. The coaches that I've seen: Earle, Coop, and now Coach Tressel.
The beautful thing about being a fan of Ohio State (or any team) is that it goes with you for your entire life. It's a constant. Ohio State has always been there. It was there when I was five and walked by the TV and didn't care what was happening (Why is dad yelling??). It was there when I was hurt my senior year of high school, and the only time I was happy was when I watched Ohio State and wished that it was me out there playing. It was there when I found out my wife was pregnant with our daughter, right before kickoff of the Akron game (Coach Tressel's first as the OSU coach).
Now as the Ohio State Buckeyes get ready to take on Indiana, I'm as excited as I was before they took on the Canes two years ago!! That's what it's all about! This may seem silly and over the top to those that don't understand the passion that is Ohio State football. But that's what separates us from them! GO BUCKS!!
