Jumping out of perfectly good airplanes.....and balloons.

glumbert.com - Space Diving

On August 16, 1960, Joel Kittinger lifted off from earth in a specially designed helium balloon. He rose to 102,800 feet.........and jumped out.

I am going skydiving(tandem) next month *edit* for my birthday present to myself.
Therefore, I have been reading and watching things about skydiving in its extreme forms.
I wish I could afford to skydive regularly, on my own, without being strapped to a more experienced person.

Col Kittinger (Joseph not Joel) later spent 307 days as a POW in North Vietnam.

Just to get an idea of how dangerous his feat was do a search on Nicholas Piantanida & Pyotr Dolgov.

He had tried it before but had spun out of control so bad he blacked out and was unable to deploy his chute. His altimeter deployed his emergency chute for him but he still fell, still unconcious, straight into the earth the first time. After recovering from his injuries, they tried again.

He became a POW because he had to bail out over Vietnam. Pretty amazing guy, really.
