go for the 4GB versions... you'd be surprised how versatile and useful these things are... mine is 'old' and I paid $400... they're already peanuts today...

I have a number of brands... can't tell ya there is any difference in any of them... I love my 4GB and 1GB Lexars... but they were the most expensive.. the SanDisk ones I have have never caused me any problems.. I probably have 6 in total and none of them have had a hitch...

but don't go small... no need to go that way anymore...

I NEVER planned on going for the 4GB one... and last month, I backed up an ENTIRE machine (not the software) on this thing... I was so impressed... I needed to have ALL my data in two places... and I needed to do 'by tomorrow morning'... I did it in minutes... was soooo cool...

What do you need it for?

Better question, do you have an iPod? You can setup the disk mode on the iPod and use it for portable storage, that's what I do. Jump drives are nice, but I like to keep the pockets light.
doesnt this involve cords or some other set up?

i think it is something id carry in my briefcase so in a lot of situations i wouldnt need to drag around my laptop. like lets say i know what the set up is and that the stuff will already be in place (computer/projector whatever is needed) so id walk in slam this puppy in do some light stretching, jump some rope, do a back flip and really impress whoever im talking too..

(ps i got a new laptop and it was the monitor backlighitng or something.)

good stuff. so i was right. spending more (even though its only ten bucks or whatever) is well worth it as i will dumbly stumble on new ways to use it.

Involves the cable, it will recognize the hard drive. If you have everything already in place the drives are cheap, I have even seem them attached to keychains now. I just brought up the iPod because a lot of people are unaware of that functionality and find out saying "oh, I didn't need that"

That was going to be my advice too. It's how I use my ipod. You don't need any software on the computers, just the usb cable. Not everyone likes using their ipod for music and files, but if you have one it might be worth spending a day just carrying it around and seeing if you like it or not.
I used to own a cheap 512 flash a couple years ago, but gave it away. It worked just fine, never had any problems with it and I think the guy I gave it to still uses it. IMO, this is one of the things where generic will serve you just fine. I'm not sure you'd ever need 4G -- but if it's around $20 why not?
