Did he want this kid? Was this someone the staff felt was a Plan "B" recruit? Did he suggest the same to Chris Wells?
I believe that JT tells each of the recruits to consider the most important decision of his young life.

The recruit in question was not a "Plan B" kid.

Carroll might be a great salesman, but it ain't exactly difficult to "sell" Southern Cal.

Carr is known as a very negative recruiter, but he also commands a lot of respect and can close players.

Coaches who "sell" get kids who are easily "sold", coaches who go "negative" get kids who are into "negativity"....

just like previously said but, one of the only ways to tell how good a kid is if he goes to the camps .Tressel gets all the kids that no one was thinking about because, of how that kid performed at the camp. Thats the top one he uses .

Tressel has alot of high schools coaches to train and teach at the camps with other type of coaches from OSU. Thats huge in showing respect to any kind of coaching in the beginning or a well known one.

Some of those coaches tell college coaches the truth about a kid good or bad

Some guys that coach around Akron are really nice guys and do what they can to help some young kid get into college

People that bad mouth Tressel as A recruiter really have no clue what goes on in recuiting a kid out of school and believe all recruiting rankings as the way ithey see it as
.

Tressel gets along and shows respect to all High school coaches and thats onething COOPER did not do as history showed

I have never recruited a High School athlete to do anything in my life, but I think I do understand selling. I manage a sales team for a Fortune 500 company.

I would do those types ofthings you mentioned...get them to camp for an eval. Build a strong network with HS coaches around the country, and especially Ohio. etc. etc.

I would initially have the assistant responsible meet the recruit to determine his success criteria, to determine whether there is a good fit for both the kid and my program. After defining his success criteria, I would ask the assistant to review them with me, to determine if I want to set up the sales process to close the recruit. I would not kiss a$$, or show up to tell them more things about my program. I would speak to the success criteria nd possibly ask the recruit to compare how we fit them vs. our competition.

If in fact, I saw deal breakers in his criteria, I would make sure we disengage.

All that said, it is just mechanics. What does Tressel and staff do? I see this stuff about text messaging how much they love a kid and additional things like that. Does Tressel & Co. do these things? Do they puff them up (Petey's famous You're my #1 guy!)?

Geez, I'm sorry if I'm a pest. Here is what I see:

1. When we lose a recruit that has an offer, I have to assume the staff wanted this kid. I'm sure the staff put the full court press on Wallace, Bowman, Hill, etc.

2. OSU loses many more OOS recruits than they get. Is Tressel's batting average good/bad/average? How does it compare?

3. People constantly complaining about the results in recruiting. Are they justified?

I have purposely kept my feelings about Tressel's success out of this thread. I don't want to influence posters who truly know.

1) There are many instances when a recruit goes from a major priority to a smaller priority due to other signings, finds, or on-field performance. Wallace was a main priority all the way, but Bowman was not.

2) Why worry about OOS recruiting when tOSU is in the midst of a major HS football hotbed? JT is right about average when it comes to OOS considering the in-state talent.

3) Look at JT's results on the field and the answer is easy.

Carr is known as a very negative recruiter, but he also commands a lot of respect and can close players.
This reminds me of an excellent story I have shared via PM with other recruitniks, but I don't think I posted on the board.

'06 SC DT Adam Patterson has been a major recruit for many programs for 2 years now. I know a coach on that staff who told me a few stories regarding negative recruiting. Apparently, the scUM coaches spent most of their time trashing the other programs involved. They said tOSU would definitely go on probation and all of Clarett's allegations were 100% true. However, scUM was not the worst in terms of trashing programs. That would be Tennessee. Phil Fulmer told a story about Georgia coaches recruiting a SC HS player who is now on the Bengals roster. Apparently, he was basically a done deal to UT. The coaches made an in-home visit and were told by an uncle that he owned a used car lot up the road. He would be most appreciative if the staff would purchase some cars to help him out. Supposedly, the UT staff refused due to NCAA rules. The next week, the recruit committed to Georgia and Fulmer sent a coach down to the HS to speak with the kid's coach. As he passed the used car lot, it was completely empty.

Grad21-

I look at the results and they sure as hell are better than Coopers or Earles, (or statistically Woody's). I believe Tressel is doing a very good job. I am not one of his detractors.

I have had employess who were superstars that hurt the performanc eof my entire team. I know what it is like to have a Clarett type on my own roster, and the almost insurmountable problems they bring. I am surprised that Tressel wouldn't take a commit from a kid who offered it, if he wanted him, unless there was much more to the story. My bottom line is that I truly believe he is rehabilitating the Bucks image, and fielding Top 5 teams at the same time. What's not to like?

I am so sick of the snide comments from my friends that are fans of other programs. I am sick of Ohio State being labled O$U. I believe Tressel will fix that.

I do wonder what happens to a Jarrett or Wallace, who seemed to be ready to come to Columbus.

I was at Chris Wells grandmas house when Tressel ,D.Tressel and I believe it was Snyder (sorry if wrong) were there to visit CHRIS WELLS.

I could say alot but, theres a few posters I have known for a while and really know the TRUTH about recruiting

I am known to talk about OSU FOOTBALL to my friends like it was the Bible to anyone that would listen but, when I was there talking to Tressel, I felt like I was in the 6th grade all over again. All my questions stayed in my head because , we were all talking about past akron arae stars and I felt like I was listening to a SPORTS HISTORY BOOK when Tressel was talking.. He is such a classa act and anyone could talk to him because, he treats all like there a STAR. to. Some people can talk in public and leave everyone impressed by being there. THATS ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT HIM AND ONETHING FOR SURE .I WOULD NEVER BE WORRIED ABOUT TRESSEL MEETING A RECRUIT ,COACH OR PARENTS.

HECK, Tressel could make me a SCUM fan if he wanted to lol

Chris ,Wells parents and relatives were all class acts to for inviting me over

Would love to hear from any of the posters who actually was recruited by JT and the curren Buckeye staff. I read all the posts, and pretty much think everyone has a piece of the whole pie. Only the insiders on the Buckeye staff know what the entire 'plan' is. Ohio is very populous, so will have a percentage of 5* players, whereas a Michigan is less populous, and so has to do national recruiting. Ohio also has the advantage of being the 'main' university, not sharing (meatchicken and MSU; Indians, Purdue and ND) with anyone else (and me with a Miami U undergrad degree).

If we can get 15 of the top 20 recruits in Ohio consistently, we'll be a top 5 (on the field) school each year. JT is recruiting the 'class' type of recruit, who cares about completing his education. MoC had all those attributes, but got to college and forgot them. (Imagine being an 18 year old with all these older people telling you how great you are --and believing it!).

On the other hand, I've read that when JT recruits OOS, he pretty much lets them know that they've got to be an impact player. That may make any OOSer skittish, when they look at the 4* and 5* players ahead of them on the depth chart. That said, looking for the 3* who has a frame that will carry more weight and can be coached up is not such a bad plan. But you cannot measure the intangibles like heart and desire (AJ was a distant 4th of the LBs recruited) to fit into and learn the Buckeye system.......

:oh: :io: As always, Go Bucks!

lagaunasurf has more than once commented on his childs recruiting process and the staff. granted hes biased as a former buckeye himself. but nothing but the highest praise.

several other posters, parents, players sibilings have had nothing but positivie things to say over the 3 years or so ive been here.

thanks, I apparently missed those posts....I've never heard anything but positives, except that 5* gomer OL who eventually signed with NC St. The 'hard sell' (verbal and don't take any more visits) might work well with a tweener, but a 4-5* probably has more offers from good D1 schools and shouldn't work as well. We'll see how well Urban Meyer works with the better recruits (it seems this year Fla is doing well) over time. Meatchicken seems to be doing well this year also, even with 5 losses (and was projected to be a top 5 team). Thanks for the refresher.

What does he tell them then, Grad, that Tennessee like only buy new! :slappy:
