Wrong glass, Sir.
I was asked by a good poster to do a photoshop of a retired number plaque for Shane Falco. Here are my thoughts.

No way Falco gets his number retired. He choked the Sugar Bowl, and since that was pre-BCS, that means that he didn't win the Big Ten, probably lost to Michigan and didn't make it to the Rose Bowl. Given his job before the players' strike, it looks like he failed to graduate also.

Not only did Johnny Utah beat SC in the Rose Bowl, but as it was pre-BCS, he obviously beat Michigan to win the Big Ten in order to get there. Also, let's not forget that he went to law school after his window closed, which means that he did graduate.

Big Difference.

If I remember correctly, pre-BCS the #1 and #2 teams met in a national championship bowl game that rotated around? I thought a cooper team played FSU one year in the sugar and it was 1 & 2? I may be way off base though.

Just trying to be fair to falco.

We played there as an at-large after choking away the Big Ten title. Until, the Big Ten/Pac Ten/Rose Bowl officially joined the BCS system, the B10 winner always went to the Rose Bowl. Also, Cooper never played for a national championship in his career at Ohio State.

Well, unless we tied for the Big10 title with Wisconsin or NW and they didn't play us and hadn't been to the Rose Bowl for a longer time than us...

I see what you're saying. In my defense, when we back into a shared title by being upset in one of the last two regular season games, I still count that as choking away a B10 title. Jeez, just debating the details of the Cooper era makes one realize how far we've come from that long nightmare.

since it was me that asked to have falco's #16 retired...i will chime in....i love johnny utah...but falco beat dallas with the scabs...and rallied from 17 points down in the second half to do it....utah had a trick knee and ended up surfing....falco....he is the comeback kid....listen...getting osu to any major bowl under cooper...which falco is when he played...was a huge job...utah played in the 1980's under bruce...i say give falco a chance....can't pin the entire sugar bowl loss on him.....

But it's possible they were not upset, Falco's tOSU team could have gone undefeated (as in 2002) and not played Iowa, who went undefeated in Big 10 play as well.

It bears mentioning that if 2002 would have been pre-BCS tOSU would not have played in the Rose Bowl then either. Iowa would have based on the fact that their last appearance was in 1991, compared to 1997 for us.

So it is not a possibility but fact that an undefeated Big 10 Champion tOSU team could miss out on a trip to the Rose Bowl, even before the BCS. So hypothetically speaking it is very possible that Falco's team could have been undefeated and ranked #1 in the country and relegated to the Sugar Bowl.
