John Calipari (official thread of impending probation)

I can confirm from "inside sources" that timing was a major obstacle in the Calipari to Ohio State conversation. I am guessing the conversation went something like this:

Calipari: Hi. I've decided to move on from Kentucky to a more exciting job opportunity. Are all the new people seated in their chairs in Columbus? It's time to begin talking about bringing a national championship to Ohio State!

Ohio State insider: Well, I think we can safely assume that lots of folks here are loving what you've done with Kentucky, but it may be a bit premature, John. Can we revisit this when hell has frozen over?
Our real problem is that we can't get 10,000 more geriatrics that can't stand to come to the Schott and take seats away from students that don't having hearing aids. It's a shame really, but folks like Calipari just want to take the money over an electric atmosphere.

Key details of John Calipari's Arkansas contract

Here's a closer look at some of the key details on John Calipari's contract at Arkansas.

Arkansas officially introduced Hall of Fame coach John Calipari as the program's 14th head coach. In the official announcement sent out to media, the school also gave details of Calipari's first contract at Arkansas and here's a closer look at some of the key details.

First, Calipari's contract is five years in length and set to run through April 30, 2029. The base salary is $500,000 but there's an additional compensation of $6.5 million to get the total salary to $7 million annually, which keeps him as the second-highest paid coach in college basketball.

On top of the base salary, there are additional financial incentives tied to the team's performance in the NCAA Tournament in a given season, that could bump his salary up significantly. See below:
  • If team makes NCAA Tournament - $50,000; or
  • If the team wins a game in the NCAA Tournament and advances to Round of 32 - $100,000; or
  • If the team reaches the Sweet Sixteen - $250,000; or
  • If the team reaches the Final Four - $350,000; or
  • If the team wins the NCAA National Championship - $500,000
Another detail in this contract is that there's an automatic one-year extension added if Arkansas makes the NCAA Tournament under Calipari. That means the deal would ultimately run through April 30, 2030.

Calipari receives a one-time signing bonus of $1 million. If Calipari were to leave for another school, his buyout is $6 million. If Arkansas were to terminate Calipari for convenience, it would owe him 75% of his remaining salary.

Great recruiter, mediocre coach.
I think he proved himself at UMass but as the game changed he wasn't building teams to win, he was recruiting blue chippers that didn't stick around. He gave Kentucky an over hyped product that looked exciting but never delivered. We'll never again see teams like back in the day where they built by solid class after class led by upperclassmen.

Yep hasn't had a great team in nearly a decade after all those recruiting classes.

Arkansas basketball recruiting: ex-FAU star Johnell Davis commits to Razorbacks, John Calipari

Arkansas landed a commitment from the No. 1 player in the CBS Sports Transfer Rankings

New Arkansas coach John Calipari made his biggest recruiting splash yet on Tuesday by landing a commitment from former Florida Atlantic star Johnell Davis. The 2023-24 AAC co-Player of the Year will give the Razorbacks one of the nation's top perimeter scorers in the season ahead as Calipari takes over following 15 seasons at Kentucky.

Davis ranks No. 1 in the CBS Sports Transfer Rankings after developing from a little-used freshman into a college basketball superstar during his four seasons with the Owls. The 6-foot-4 guard played an integral role in FAU's run to the 2023 Final Four and returned to anchor the team last season.

With Davis as their leading scorer, the Owls finished 25-9 and went 14-4 in the AAC during their first season in the league. Davis averaged 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 41.4% from 3-point range. A multi-faceted scorer, Davis has also shot 51.5% or better from 2-point range in all four of his college seasons to date while proving to be an efficient and reliable offensive weapon.

Arkansas' other transfer commitments are from centers Jonas Aidoo (Tennessee) and Zvonimir Ivišić (Kentucky). The Razorbacks are not expected to return a single scholarship player from their 2023-24 roster.
