Joe Theismann (official thread)

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Joe Theismann will not return as an analyst on "Monday Night Football" this season, according to reports from Newsday and The New York Times.

This is definitely good news to any football fan. Theismann was painful to listen to. I never understood why they included this moron as part of the new ESPN MNF Crew. Listening to him and Kornheiser argue every week was unbearable. Good QB, terrible TV broadcaster. Good riddance.

It's a start. Now if they would can Kornheiser and Tirico we might be getting somewhere. Also, get rid of the ridiculous celebrity cameos and I might start watching again. I honestly couldn't sit through more than a quarter of any MNF game all year. I like Kornheiser on PTI, but he has no place in a broadcast booth whatsoever. Of ourse, now I could see the dumb fucks finding a spot for Skip Bayless or somebody equally worthless on the show. This is E!spn after all.

Skip Bayless would be enough for me to drive to Bristol with lots of ammunition.
Theismann is a douchebag and I'm glad he's gone. Maybe Kornheiser won't be so bad now that Joe isn't there to annoy the shit out of me.

Greg Easterbrook makes the point that ABC (and now ESPN) have kept trying to catch lightning in a bottle again and again and again. they keep hoping for another Meredith-Cosell team -- but it will probably never happen again.

Easterbrook suggests, and I agree, that most people watching MNF don't care who is announcing as much as they'd like A GOOD GAME. ABC and ESPN seem to think we'll watch because celebrity X is in the booth ("wow, how exciting - Theismann and Kornheiser!). no. we watch because the game promises to be good. just give us two good announcers, stop interupting the game to interview celebrities and let the football be the mainstay.

this, of course, will never happen because it involves common sense.

Kornheiser is the real problem with that team. He doesn't know a goddamn thing about football and it shows every time he opens his mouth to add some insight to the play by play. I liked Madden and Micheals 10X more than these clowns. MNF was damn near unwatchable last year.

Thank goodness! Theismann was terrible; just horribly suited for commentary.

My issue with Theismann was that he was too fanatical in the booth and it clouded his ability to explain what was going on. He was like Dickie V in that he'd fawn all over particular star players for the entire broadcast, and he'd talk down to the audience as though the viewer couldn't understand the complexities of football, and in doing so he completely ignored his role of explaining play selections, defenses, etc. He provided absolutely ZERO insight about the game of football, which is astoundingly difficult to do when you're one of the games' great QBs.

He was the anti-Gary Danielson.

I will give Theismann credit for two things, though. One: He sat beside Paul McGuire for a decade or so and didn't kill him. For comparison, Griese and Nessler worked all of about five college games this season before they made Paul find his own seat in a truck or down at field level. Two: Theismann was like an Edgar Cayce in reverse when it came to predictions. Really, if the zebras wanted to save time on replays, they'd phone up to the booth, ask for what Theismann thought the ruling on the play should be, and then they'd pick the opposite of that. It'd shave 10-15 minutes off of every NFL broadcast.
