Win or lose, trip to title game means money in bank for opposing coaches

Sunday, November 26, 2006

Jill Riepenhoff
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

At 175 pounds, Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel already is worth more than his weight in gold.
Winning a trip to the Bowl Championship Series title game on Jan. 8 tipped the scales even further to Tressel?s advantage.
He will pocket an extra $200,000 because the Buckeyes earned a trip to Glendale, Ariz. If the team wins, he can land a more lucrative new contract.
Tressel?s possible competitors in the bowl game stand to collect a bounty, too, based on a review of their contracts.
If Michigan reaches the national championship game, coach Lloyd Carr will collect at least an extra $56,000.
If the bid goes to the Florida Gators, coach Urban Meyer will receive $150,000.
If the Southern California Trojans play, coach Pete Carroll likely will get something. Because USC is a private school, no one knows for sure because his contract is private.
Tressel stands to be the biggest winner if the Buckeyes claim a second national championship during his tenure at Ohio State.
Just nine months ago, Tressel cut a new deal with Ohio State that gave him a 44 percent pay raise. He?s now among the highest-paid college football coaches in the country, with earnings this year of $2.6 million.
From Ohio State?s perspective, the 53-year-old Tressel is priceless.
"He?s worth paying for," athletics director Gene Smith said. "We?ve turned the corner with off-the-field problems; the grade-point averages continue to rise; the wins mount. He?s just done a marvelous job."
Tressel receives the cash bonus for a postseason game only if the team is playing for all the marbles.
His bosses expect OSU to win enough football games each season to earn a bowl berth. Tressel is bonus-worthy only when the national championship is at stake.
"It?s a reward for a job well done," Smith said.
Though Tressel?s bonus would buy almost 4,000 tickets to a game at Ohio Stadium, or pay for 80 trips with the OSU alumni association to the Arizona bowl, it represents only 8 percent of his total compensation.
Carr made sure that his coaches all receive something extra if the Wolverines play for the national championship. He wrote it into his contract.
If Michigan plays Jan. 8, the coaches will be rewarded with an undisclosed bonus.
Carr?s contract mandates that he will receive a bonus of two months? base salary ? about $56,000 this year ? for playing in any bowl, regardless of prestige. If he?s playing for the national championship, university officials will reward him with an unspecified amount.
Florida?s coach can pocket $325,000 if the Gators win the Southeastern Conference and national championships.
If Tressel wins it all, he?s entitled to ask for a new contract, which would result in more money and more job security.
That?s news to Tressel.
"I didn?t even know about it," Tressel said through a statement issued by a university spokesman. "We?ll worry about it on the 9 th (of January). Right now, I?ve got a game to get ready for."
Nine months ago, Tressel cut a new deal with Ohio State at Smith?s insistence.
"I felt that Jim?s compensation was not consistent with our expectations," Smith said, explaining why he offered the coach a sweeter deal in February. "He was a person deserving of a new contract."
Tressel?s pay comes from a combination of athletics-department sources, including television revenue and Nike apparel contracts. No money comes from the university?s general budget.
Ohio State has promised to keep Tressel on the football field through at least 2013.
The new $2.6 million contract trumped a 2003 agreement that had guaranteed Tressel $1.6 million this season, roughly the value of his weight in gold. Now, he?s platinum.
