Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

This is great

Browns assistant coach Terry Robiskie remembers the recruitment of his son Brian, now a receiver for the Buckeyes, and his wife watching Tressel walk up their driveway.
"She saw him with his gray suit and his red tie and his little American flag pin, and she said, 'That's it,' " Robiskie said.
And Brian was off to Columbus. Mothers, prepare yourselves.

Not saying anything new here, but damn it's good having Jim Tressel in Columbus

Ladykiller.

You're dead on--Jim Tressel is just what the program needed--hope he never leaves.

He's done a marvelous job in Ohio, granted. But what amuses me no end is that he's making serious inroads in the state of Michigan. LLLLoyd must be in constant slow-burn mode. :tongue2:

The "Ladykiller" side of his style is, believe it or not, reminiscent of Woody--one of his tactics was to go into the mother's kitchen, put on an apron and help her make dessert, talking about everything BUT football.

Anyway, as I've said before, I'll take JT over ten of any other coach you care to name. He's the greatest.

Tressel is amazing and deserves all of the accolades that he gets. I was just wondering... anybody thinking about naming a future kid Tressel?

Weird first name for sure, especially for a girl, but man that would be cool.

Like: "Hey, my name's Tressel Woody [Buck]."

Best name ever. I'd do it, but I don't think my wife would be down for that.

I remember right after Cooper got canned trying to convince my former commander and boss how good Tressel would be for Ohio State. I wonder how many folks now wish someone else were hired...

Probably Cooper and that's it!:tongue2:
By the way, the August issue of the Buckeye Sports Bulletin (print version) has probably the best article on JT I've ever seen. Some of the stuff I already knew, but it really gets into depth. Definitely worth reading.

In Tressel We Trust!!

What can you say about Jim Tressel? If your a Michigan fan, there is probably a lot you can say and none of it good.

I was a nay sayer when JT got hired. Who is this guy? Why is he a front runner? Blah blah blah.

Then you saw him on the sidelines. He had the look of an Ohio State coach. What sealed it up for me, was how he gave his team all the credit for wins, and he owned up to mistakes on his part. Heck of a guy.

I do believe Woody is looking down and smiling, Ladies and Gents. :)

OHIO STATE at TEXAS

OHIO STATE
AT TEXAS
Tonight, 8
Royal-Texas
Memorial Stadium, Austin, Texas
TV Channel 5

In a week when Jim Tressel?s honesty has been called into question and his team?s national title hopes are on the line, the Ohio State head coach doesn?t feel pressure.
At least Tressel isn?t showing it. Tressel was relaxed, even humorous, during lunch with reporters earlier in the week. The mild-mannered head coach hardly ever shows his emotions in public, and no one should expect that to change just because No. 1 Ohio State heads to Austin to play No. 2 Texas in an early season mega-showdown tonight.
Tressel took a break from his question-and-answer session to break out a Bill Parcells impersonation.
When an Ohio State public relations handler stepped to the front of Tressel?s podium, the head coach thought his Q-and-A was over. Informed he still had three more questions to field, Tressel smiled.
?I?m going to do a Bill Parcells,? Tressel said, straight-faced. ?Nope. Yep. Because I want to. Does that answer your questions??
The room laughed. Tressel?s jokes aren?t usually this funny. But given the week and circumstances, Tressel?s Comedy Central routine was humorous.
The Buckeyes left Columbus on Friday afternoon for Austin and had a walk-through at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The empty stadium was a stark contrast to what it will be like tonight, when a record crowd will watch the nationally televised, prime-time game.
The game is hyped as Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith against Texas? experienced defense. Smith shrugged off the hype.
The fifth-year senior sees the game for what it is.
?I don?t think it?s Troy Smith versus their defense,? Smith said. ? ... I wouldn?t be in this situation if my teammates didn?t do such a great job. I try not to take the majority of the (credit) because it?s everyone doing their part.
?This kind of game gets your blood, adrenaline and juices flowing. With that in mind, there is going to be a stadium full of people who don?t want you to win. You have to do everything in your power to overcome that. Hopefully, that drives us.?
While fans will watch Smith, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and running back Antonio Pittman, the matchup that may indicate how well, or poorly, Ohio State moves the ball will be on the offensive line. Left guard Tim Schafer will go against Longhorn defensive tackle Frank Okam, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound Playboy All-American.
But Tressel, a taskmaster at breaking down film, said he thinks he has an idea of what the Longhorns will bring, but not completely.
?You really don?t know about anyone until you?re face-to-face ... but you have an idea when you watch them,? Tressel said. ?You can tell this guy runs fast, this guys throws well, this guy tackles well.?
While the game will have national title implications, Tressel is as interested in fielding the best team he can for the Big Ten season.
Don?t expect many surprises. Ohio State will put the game in Smith?s hands. Texas will keep it out of redshirt freshman quarterback Colt McCoy?s.
?I don?t see their defense as being a reactionary defense,? Tressel said. ?What they do is say, ?Hey, here we come, see if you can block us. Hey, we?re covering you, see if you can get open.? ... All those kids who are playing faced Vince Young in practice the last three years. Their awareness level of a quarterback keeping a play alive and staying with your receiver is high. ... They?re very well schooled.?
Class starts at 8 tonight. Someone is stepping to the front, or staying there. Reach Repository sports writer Todd Porter at (330) 580-8340 or e-mail: [email protected]

Just contrast the values with those of Charlie Weis. No contest in my mind. Jim Tressel not only leads this team, he is building these young men for success in all fields of life. It doesn't get much better than Jim Tressel.

GO BUCKS, BEAT TEXAS!

COMMENTARY
OSU head coach has proved very heady
Monday, September 11, 2006
ROB OLLER
20060911-Pc-D10-0900.jpg

The Boy Scouts have been reinvited to the Horseshoe, but it?s not like their spirit ever left.
Even when the scouts were absent from Ohio Stadium in August, bounced by university officials who decided football games no longer needed their services as volunteer ushers, Jim Tressel carried their motto in his manicured manila folders: Be prepared.
If there?s an overriding message from the 24-7 win over Texas on Saturday, it?s that Tressel teams thrive on preparation. Give the OSU coach a month or so to ready his players for an opponent and the results usually will favor the Buckeyes, who are 4-1 in bowl games the past five seasons.
With few exceptions ? the Outback Bowl loss to South Carolina in 2001 and the Texas loss last season ? Tressel tops the competition when he has time to outline an opponent?s every weakness.
The Longhorns? weaknesses were manifold, so in hindsight, with all summer to prepare for Texas, it really was no contest. Mack Brown is a master recruiter who won a national championship last season, but the whispers continue even in Austin that the UT coach clenches in big games and that Vince Young?s talent masked his coach?s lapses last season. That may be a bit harsh, but it did appear that Tressel vs. Brown was a mismatch. Texas experienced numerous coaching gaffes, including oneon-one coverage of Ted Ginn Jr., failing to continue running the ball despite a 5.5-yard average, and the odd decision to challenge a fumble ruling despite clear replay evidence that the officials called it correctly.
Tressel can be accused of conservative play-calling, although he has shown a more wide-open side in the past two games, but don?t confuse his low-risk approach with low aptitude. The guy knows exactly what he?s doing. If there?s one thing he loves more than a successful ground game, it?s strong groundwork. He seems like a coach who most enjoys exposing the other team?s fault lines, also known as the game within the game. He also has an answer for nearly everything ? even when his answers don?t sound like answers ? except when a Vince Young crosses his path. But Texas didn?t have Young, which means it didn?t have a chance. Not against Tressel. Scout?s honor.
Lamb chops on OSU schedule ?

As if defeating No. 2 Texas wasn?t enough good news, the Buckeyes had to be smiling to see that other Saturday games had Notre Dame thumping Penn State, 41-17, California crushing Minnesota 42-7, Rutgers embarrassing Illinois 33-0, New Hampshire hammering Northwestern 34-17 and Ball State defeating Indiana 24-23. The Buckeyes face all of those losing teams this season.
Ohio State also had to notice that Iowa showed what it becomes without quarterback Drew Tate, who didn?t play in the Hawkeyes? narrow 20-13 double-overtime win against a Syracuse team that wasn?t supposed to be about to fight its way out of a wet paper bag. Tate, who played in the Sept. 2 opening win against Montana, missed the game because of a nagging abdominal strain suffered during preseason camp. The Hawkeyes play host to OSU in a night game on Sept. 30.
There were, however, a couple of Big Ten scores that might sober the Buckeyes. Michigan defeated Central Michigan 41-17, and Michigan State defeated Eastern Michigan 52-20. Then again, maybe not. Penn State crushed Akron 34-16 in its opener, then came the wake-up call against the Fighting Irish.
