In a week when Jim Tressel?s honesty has been called into question and his team?s national title hopes are on the line, the Ohio State head coach doesn?t feel pressure.
At least Tressel isn?t showing it. Tressel was relaxed, even humorous, during lunch with reporters earlier in the week. The mild-mannered head coach hardly ever shows his emotions in public, and no one should expect that to change just because No. 1 Ohio State heads to Austin to play No. 2 Texas in an early season mega-showdown tonight.
Tressel took a break from his question-and-answer session to break out a Bill Parcells impersonation.
When an Ohio State public relations handler stepped to the front of Tressel?s podium, the head coach thought his Q-and-A was over. Informed he still had three more questions to field, Tressel smiled.
?I?m going to do a Bill Parcells,? Tressel said, straight-faced. ?Nope. Yep. Because I want to. Does that answer your questions??
The room laughed. Tressel?s jokes aren?t usually this funny. But given the week and circumstances, Tressel?s Comedy Central routine was humorous.
The Buckeyes left Columbus on Friday afternoon for Austin and had a walk-through at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The empty stadium was a stark contrast to what it will be like tonight, when a record crowd will watch the nationally televised, prime-time game.
The game is hyped as Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith against Texas? experienced defense. Smith shrugged off the hype.
The fifth-year senior sees the game for what it is.
?I don?t think it?s Troy Smith versus their defense,? Smith said. ? ... I wouldn?t be in this situation if my teammates didn?t do such a great job. I try not to take the majority of the (credit) because it?s everyone doing their part.
?This kind of game gets your blood, adrenaline and juices flowing. With that in mind, there is going to be a stadium full of people who don?t want you to win. You have to do everything in your power to overcome that. Hopefully, that drives us.?
While fans will watch Smith, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and running back Antonio Pittman, the matchup that may indicate how well, or poorly, Ohio State moves the ball will be on the offensive line. Left guard Tim Schafer will go against Longhorn defensive tackle Frank Okam, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound Playboy All-American.
But Tressel, a taskmaster at breaking down film, said he thinks he has an idea of what the Longhorns will bring, but not completely.
?You really don?t know about anyone until you?re face-to-face ... but you have an idea when you watch them,? Tressel said. ?You can tell this guy runs fast, this guys throws well, this guy tackles well.?
While the game will have national title implications, Tressel is as interested in fielding the best team he can for the Big Ten season.
Don?t expect many surprises. Ohio State will put the game in Smith?s hands. Texas will keep it out of redshirt freshman quarterback Colt McCoy?s.
?I don?t see their defense as being a reactionary defense,? Tressel said. ?What they do is say, ?Hey, here we come, see if you can block us. Hey, we?re covering you, see if you can get open.? ... All those kids who are playing faced Vince Young in practice the last three years. Their awareness level of a quarterback keeping a play alive and staying with your receiver is high. ... They?re very well schooled.?
