Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Sporting News

On the offensive
June 28, 2006
Is there a better big-game coach than Jim Tressel?
I think not.
Why? Because he's not afraid to think outside his sweater vest.
Big games with Texas, Penn State, Iowa and Michigan lurk. And so might a national title.
I think 1,000 more Ted Ginn jerseys were just sold. Oh, and I know Brutus' heart is beating a little faster, too, after reading that.
No doubt, this is the biggest season at Ohio State since . . . well, since last year. Hey, it's like this every year in Columbus. OK, maybe the hype-o-meter is registering two ticks past "berserk" instead of just one tick. Now I'm gonna test the limits of the hype-o-meter: Sporting News has your Buckeyes ranked No. 2 in the nation with an 11-1 record and 8-0 Big Ten mark. (Honestly, I would have ranked OSU No. 1.)
Here's why Sporting News has given Ohio State two big scoops of love.

The offense looks incredible. No, make that stupendous. Wait, maybe it's fabulous. Forget it. I'm not gonna try to label it. I'm just gonna watch quarterback Troy Smith, Ginn, Antonio Pittman, Chris Wells and a knock-out line and let my mind drift to 1995. You remember that year, when Bobby Hoying, Terry Glenn, Eddie George, Rickey Dudley and Orlando Pace helped the Buckeye offense set the nation on its ear.
I know what you're thinking, Michigan Man: What about the Ohio State defense? There are nine starters to replace. It's been reloaded. Let me introduce you to the latest and greatest BMOCs: linebackers Larry Grant, Marcus Freeman and Jim Laurinaitis, tackle Quinn Pitcock, end Lawrence Grant, cornerbacks Kurt Coleman and Malcolm Jenkins and safety Jamario O'Neal.
Yeah, pretty sweet, huh?
OK, now take a deep breath, Brutus. The first "i" won't be dotted for a couple months. But it's difficult not to develop a facial twitch when thinking about how great the Tressel era has been. Let me count the ways.
ONE national title.
TWO Big Ten crowns.
THREE wins in three BCS games.
FOUR wins in five tries vs. "that school up north."
FIVE bowl appearances.
I'll stop there so you can go dig out your buckeye necklace and No. 45 jersey. (What am I thinking? You probably already have them on!) You have some dreaming to do.

That Sporting News guy (Tom Dienhart) got so excited he called Lawrence Wilson by the wrong last name.

the funny thing is, I was getting so excited just reading this authors words that I completely missed that until I had to go back over and read it lol

I think SOME people might be getting carried away with our offense though. Lets be honest, we have the ABILITY and the PLAYERS to have the best offense in the nation. But lets not forget who's calling the shots, Jim Tressel(this is NOT a knock). In the mid 90's we would score and score and score some more without hesitation. However, under Tressel its been very clear that he is more comfortable sitting on a good lead than taking his chances at making huge mistakes and letting a team back into the game.

We will probably have one of the top offenses in the nation for sure, but I dont think the stats/scores will tell that tail.

Good call Magua...

Though by SOME people, I think we have to be talking about talking heads, and not Buckeye fans on this site. Those here know that our offense was better last year than we showed against most of the teams on the latter half of our schedule.

But when Tressel thinks the other team is going to score, like at Minnesota or Notre Dame, our offense puts up numbers.

We could have laid 100 on Illinois or Northwestern if we'd been so inclined.

Bear in mind also that Tressel milks the clock on every possession of the game. This holds down our number of plays and, over the course of a season, our number of possessions.

Tressel praises YSU coach
By JOHN VARGO Tribune Chronicle

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State coach Jon Heacock’s predecessor has a great deal of respect for the job he’s done for the Penguins.

“I think Jon Heacock is doing a great job,” said Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, who coached YSU from 1986-2000.

The Penguins were one of three teams to win the Gateway Conference title last season — the first Gateway title in school history. However, YSU narrowly missed the 16-team playoffs.

“They were very close, in my mind, to being one of the best teams in I-AA last year,” Tressel said. “I think the I-AA tournament is lucky he didn’t get in because the way they were playing, they would’ve made a great run.”

Both coaches were part of the Camp of Champions at Cardinal Mooney High School’s athletic complex, which was held Monday and Tuesday.

“We have to take care of it ourselves,” Heacock said. “It was a valuable learning experience to be so close and have successes.

“Yet, you know what, it wasn’t good enough.”

This season, YSU has a strong senior class that is arguably one of the Gateway’s best.

“As I listen to Jon, he feels good about his team this year. He’s got a great senior class that will provide good leadership,” Tressel said. “He’s done a great job in the community.

“Expectations are high at Youngstown State, just like they are at Ohio State, here at Cardinal Mooney, Warren G. Harding or all the elite places.”

Heacock remembers expectations weren’t always this high.

“I think we’ve worked hard to get to this point. Our players have. It’s very exciting,” Heacock said. “I remember a few years ago when we were 4-7 and nobody was excited about anything except the players and the coaches.

“Now, you feel the buzz and the expectations. I like them. I think it puts some emphasis on the expectations you have.”

He’s reached that level with a good support staff.

“In hiring coaches and recruiting players, the key is to recruit good people and good coaches and allow them to coach,” Heacock said. “As long as you have good people in your program, they’ll work hard when things aren’t so good — no matter what everybody thinks outside the program.

“That’s the one thing we’ve been blessed with. They’ve all fought for the cause.”

Prior to being named YSU coach, Heacock spent seven of the 10 previous years as an assistant — including spending six as the defensive coordinator.

“I think being here has helped me as much as being the head coach,” he said. “I think I know all the things we did and didn’t do that allowed us to have success.”

SI.COM

Was on their sight this morning. In a new poll, 27% of the reader's name JT as the best coach in college football. He got the majority--runner-up was, I believe, Carroll with 26%. So far, 10,000 votes are in.

I heartily concur with the 26%!

In Tressel We Trust!!!!!

Tressels Record

I know most of you hate ESPN, but this was in the Ohio State review and I thought it was pretty interesting.

"Tressel's 50-13 record compares favorably to the first five years of the college football coaching legends. Joe Paterno went 42-10-1 his first five seasons at Penn State. Tom Osborne was 46-13-2 after five years at Nebraska. Bobby Bowden stood 44-14 after five years at Florida State. Barry Switzer was an unbelievable 51-5-2 after half a decade at Oklahoma."

-ESPN

Pretty sweet

Nice article (FINALLY) by ES-spin.

Tress will easily go down as one of the greats, not just because of his national title. We will love him the way we love the forefathers like Hayes, and Paul Brown. Tressels accomplishments are undeniabl great. He is the only coach to ever be AP Coach of year year in both D1AA and D1A. Then take into account his drafts, his award winners the years he has coached here, the All-Americans, the bowl record and the Michigan record, and what I think is his most important accomplishment - academic all-americans on his football squad. We have led 2 staright years in a row with the most academic AA's, a feat you think would go to Northwestern.....Wehn Tressel retires, he will have his own banner hanging on the walls of Ohio Stadium, just like Woody.

As well he should. I had a special feeling about him when I heard his introductory speech 5 years ago (............and especially 310 days from now in Ann Arbor, MI..............)

Let's all be thankful that we have him.

Being from Y-Town, I was hoping tOSU would hire him since back in '96...I remember getting laughed at by people in Columbus when I brought it up (I was living in C-bus at the time)...I'm sure those people wouldn't mind a big, fat "I told ya so" at this point...

Sorry to hear that people laughed at you. Same thing happened to me when I brought his name up to my friends when Cooper was let go. They have since given me the "good call" props, so I don't feel the need to rub it in.

Tressel, he's definitely one of the best and will be for a long long time. A great hire even though he wasn't the first couple of choices. I've always said that I'd rather be lucky than good.

But it really is a tad early to compare him to Wayne Woodrow and I don't mean that as a cheap shot because there are not many folks who can compare to him.

I know that some of the younger members of this board find those words hard to believe but I am here to tell you that the stories you see and hear don't even come close. That man single handedly made OSU football what it is today including bringing the rivalry with TSUN the most envied in College football bar none.

I can think of only a handful of coaches do what he did for their respective Universities such as Switzer, Bryant and not many more. Woody also had personality PLUS.

I think I just cannonized him.:)

Would you consider substituting Bud Wilkinson's name for Barry Switzer? My opinion of Switzer being in the same category as Woody and Bear are summed up by his initials. :wink2:
