Yep that was the Peach Bowl year against Georgia (and gave up 45 to the turds up north). The defensive collapse in that game will always haunt me.Trying to figure out how UCLA put 42 on Penn State and then remembering his first Buckeye defense. They sucked too, with guys out of place, receivers running free, etc. maybe that’s going to be the case at PSU until his players “get” what he’s doing.
so it'll take 2 or 3 years (or more, since they don't quite have the talent OSU did when he started)....then Penn State's D will be right back to where they were last year?Trying to figure out how UCLA put 42 on Penn State and then remembering his first Buckeye defense. According the cult's football experts, it won't take several years for Knowles to completely get his scheme in place. They already have the best athletes he's ever worked with!so it'll take 2 or 3 years (or more, since they don't quite have the talent OSU did when he started)....then Penn State's D will be right back to where they were last year?
this move was annoying only in the sense it gave those hilljacks something to guffaw about, but it was never a threat to Ohio State. Penn State has had a very very good defense every year that we've been reminding them they're 2nd rate B1G on a good day.
This is further backed up by Sonny on Caleb & Josh Downs podcast where Sonny says the guys were ready to "crash out" because the call was coming in so late on defense:I think it’s important to remember that Ryan Day openly said, and I’m paraphrasing “after the Oregon game it was obvious our guys weren’t set defensively in time. Whatever the call on the field is, it doesn’t matter if they’re not ready when the ball is snapped”.
That’s when he got involved in the defense….and he rightfully believed no matter the defense called….it’s going to execute at a higher level if everyone is on the same page. Not sure if that’s an issue for Penn State currently, but I wouldn’t be surprised….
The whole "Knowles to PSU" thing was puzzling to me to begin with. I understand getting the guy who put together one of the nation's top defenses when he became available, especially after your previous DC left for another job. But defense hasn't been their problem. They also have been fielding one of the best Ds. I think Knowles actually makes things worse for them because of changing to a whole new system that is more complicated and takes time to learn. I think some of the cult are beginning to figure that out with some of them even saying that now they know why many of us weren't that upset about him leaving.Knowles is a weird guy who overthinks things and left to his own devices, his defenses get gashed several times a year. There is no way UCLA should have been able to put up that many points on PSU given the talent and experience PSU possesses.
Their problem also is they don’t recruit at a top level as well. So they have this complex system to learn and then their players aren’t quite top level as well. Yes they have some good players but not the depth of them. The whole "Knowles to PSU" thing was puzzling to me to begin with.
