Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

Yeah I mean to go to Penn State? Only one school worse he could’ve gone to.

When coaches go to close schools we compete with yearly then to me they’ve made it personal.

Jim had to change the way he coaches here and I just think that didn’t sit right with him. After year 1 he harped every week that we can’t give up the big play. Well that’s a change from “there’s going to be 4-5 of those per game. It happens.”

I think Ryan took the starch out of his approach and that’s not the way he wants to coach.

What I’d say is Ryan was right. Your defense wasn’t disciplined the first year and if you’d like to play an aggressive and wreckless defense then this will be the perfect spot for you. The head coach at Penn State is wreckless and so is the offensive coordinator. So he’ll fit in there if that’s the reason (which is my guess along with not wanting to be on staff with Lj).

Also good fucking luck trying to defend these WRs next year in Columbus.
This is the ticket. When playing Georgia with a 11 point lead midway through 4th quarter……all we had to do was prevent the big play. Knowles put Ransom out on an island , he fell (but truth is, he was beaten already)…..Knowles had no feel for the situation.

Also don’t forget……something strange happened to our defense when we went up 28-7 vs Notre Dame. ND started shredding us. Same thing that Michigan did…..

perhaps Day saw that big time teams had started to figure out Knowles’ D

Well that’s disappointing. It felt like we finally got to his fully functioning, exotic system. I mean this defense was legit and came a long way since he showed up.

He was throwing masterclasses in the playoffs. The defense was as prepared as I’ve ever seen. Go rewatch the games and notice how many signals/communication happens and the Bucks were in the right spot.

Definitely seems like a neurotic, odd genius type so who knows what the motive is. He won’t have the dogs at PSU.

Thank you and I wish him bad luck moving forward.
not taking whatever away from knowles, but how much of that was due to guerrieri (safeties) and laurenaitis (lb’s)?

Gotta think this was because of the nonsense with Johnson. Which means it's a stupid own goal that could've/should've been prevented. It's a personal fuck you from Knowles. Otherwise, he goes to Okie. Instead, he stays in conference to play us every year and does it at the school from whence Johnson came. That poetry is absolutely not lost on Jimmy from Philly.
No way OU was matching $3mil/year

I'm speculating that he was leaving no matter what. OU was probably the destination until PSU swooped in and made an offer he couldn't refuse. Again, speculation on my part based on everything I've read.

I’m going to blame Herbstreit for this, but I think people are conflating criticism with being an insane asshole.

I’m not super invested in this given the ultimate results, but you could criticize Knowles in the championship game for continuing to put the defense in vulnerable positions by leaning too heavily on run-stopping blitzes out of cover 1 man which directly led to almost every single big play Notre Dame hit through the air.

Early in the game, and especially as a direct response to the first drive, yeah, go with that, it was important to shut down those soul crushing drives.

In the second half with a 21 point lead? Sitting back and preventing big plays out of the zone schemes they were insanely good at in the playoff run would have almost certainly been better, even if they happened to give up another nine minute scoring drive. In that context, a nine minute scoring drive is still a win for the defense and Notre Dame still needed to force some of those throws downfield if they were even trying to win.

I’d like to think I can point that out without being an insane asshole about it and demanding he be fired (or whatever).
During the game, I was complaining in the second half that manning up and taking gambles blitzing is exactly how Penn State messed around and found out against ND, so in that sense, it’s a great fit.

I like the idea of promoting safeties coach Matt Guerreri(sp) who Day called a "rising star" today. He is very familiar with Knowles system, having coached with him for a number of years. He also knows the players and the culture of Ohio State football. He has some DC experience, is young and is also a great recruiter, which isn't one of Knowles strengths. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Knowles try to poach him to PSU.

Overall thoughts on Knowles. Obviously big loss, but not the downfall of OSU by any means.

Despite the statistical success, second half adjustments seemed to be hit or miss with Knowles.

He wasn't a great recruiter, but did a solid job in support of the defensive position coaches to sell the system.

The big issue for PSU is that they are obviously trying to win a natty. Knowles system is a gradual build up over the course of a couple seasons.

Normally, I would wish him luck, but I won't. I will just thank him for this season.

May not be any narrative beyond $. Let’s see the $, years, and guarantee.
Yeah I don't think it needs to be rocket science or any particular nefarious reason. $3+ million for a DC is crazy money and PSU is desparate for a title - they're reloading as much as possible while they can.

I imagine we get a bit of a buyout money and maybe can use that for whoever is next up.

I am going to call it, Matt Guerrieri and Tim Walton will be Co-Dc's in 2025.
