Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

Really do appreciate the Natty, Jim

Clearly he wanted out of CBUS. Going to Penn St is unforgivable. UM and PSU - you do not go to under any circumstances as a Buckeye imo.

To not attend the celebration (at least I did not see him on stage) and announce it hours afterwards? Seems spiteful but I hope that is not the case.
Eh they didn't camera cut or bring any of the other coach up on stage.

The announcing it after could be a favor to us considering the transfer portal closed yesterday we don't have to deal with that while working out his replacemnet

Yeah LJ may be getting on in years but he quite literally is the best college DL coach in history. Ryan clearly believes the same. We don't need a "mastermind" coordinator or super schemes. We need sound, fundamental football with some wrinkles when we play the big boys. Either coach at Ohio State or get wrecked by Ohio State.

So long and thanks for your part in the NC but if you're going to PSU, I want blood.

(Not literal blood)

Except we blitz LBs and did slants and stunts with the DL before Knowles...and all that vanished and our DL was invisible for 3 years after Knowles up until after the Oregon game.
This probably should go in the LJ Sr thread, but my perception was that we were aggressive under Coombs, and this resulted in the DL constantly getting way too far up field and out of position. Under Knowles, maintaining gap assignments was emphasized while being creative with blitzes, the Jack, and stunts to confuse the OL about who had which gap assignments. For whatever reason (probably LJ Sr being stubborn in some way), this creativity wasn’t a part of the defense up until the Oregon loss and the front four was getting no pressure.

In either scenario (aggression or gap assignments), it seems to me that LJ Sr wasn’t very effective at getting his unit to perform well… possibly because, whatever he was before (greatest DL coach ever, even), he’s 73 now and way past his prime. And also, possibly because he was somehow impeding Knowles implementing the creativity he wanted to in the front, most notably with the Jack, but also just in general.

Gotta think this was because of the nonsense with Johnson. Which means it's a stupid own goal that could've/should've been prevented. It's a personal fuck you from Knowles. Otherwise, he goes to Okie. Instead, he stays in conference to play us every year and does it at the school from whence Johnson came. That poetry is absolutely not lost on Jimmy from Philly.

Penn State is all in for next year - can't blame them. It'll be their best shot at a title since some time ago. The $3+ million salary for a DC is a crazy large amount of money. I also wonder if this is a bit of a sign that Knowles will eventually go for a head coach position in a year or two - take the money and added responsibility while positions like OU figure out their next steps.

Well that’s disappointing. It felt like we finally got to his fully functioning, exotic system. I mean this defense was legit and came a long way since he showed up.

He was throwing masterclasses in the playoffs. The defense was as prepared as I’ve ever seen. Go rewatch the games and notice how many signals/communication happens and the Bucks were in the right spot.

Definitely seems like a neurotic, odd genius type so who knows what the motive is. He won’t have the dogs at PSU.

Thank you and I wish him bad luck moving forward.
