Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

I don’t think it was just about the jack, I think it was just general philosophy of coaching the DL.

Hypothetically, Knowles says, “hey, I’d really like to run some slants and stunts with the DL while blitzing some LBs” (see: exactly what they did against ND and for the second half of the year) and LJ Sr says “no, I coach my guys to be assignment sound, we don’t need stunts to get pressure or win gaps in the run game” (see: everything up to and including the Oregon game).

The Oregon game is what it seemingly took for LJ Sr to finally get overruled (presumably by Day weighing in), but it seems highly plausible to me the massive success in the playoff run doing what Knowles wanted the entire time could have made him upset and spiteful it didn’t happen sooner.
You have this completely backwards.

Except we blitz LBs and did slants and stunts with the DL before Knowles...and all that vanished and our DL was invisible for 3 years after Knowles up until after the Oregon game.

Don't know if I mentioned it in here before but one name I saw run around was John Heacock, Jim's brother over at Iowa State formerly of Youngstown State. Jim Tressel certainly has Day's ear too. It will be interesting to see if they promote from within or if they go outside the WHAC if this is all true. Thamel and others now reporting Knowles to PSU done deal

Hoping they get another top DC and make MG co-DC.

IF, and again, IF this is about friction with LJ, then I for one completely understand Knowles leaving. He was hired as "the head coach of the defense" but may have been, behind the scenes, allowed to be told by an assistant coach..nah, I don't like that, I'm not coaching it up that way..

Especially after what appeared to be a move towards what Knowles wanted showed such great success..if he felt any backsliding at all, I understand saying screw this..I'll go Coach somewhere that I can completely run things the way I want to.

Totally sucks that it may be PedU but...
