Reports: Snead to Transfer IT Staff
InsideTexas.com
Nov 29, 2006
According to sources, University of Texas true freshman quarterback Jevan Snead has asked to be released from his scholarship so that he may transfer to a different school.

Several media outlets, including the Dallas Morning News and the Austin American-Statesman reported on Jevan Snead?s desire to transfer, while the Fort Worth Star-Telegram quoted Snead as denying that he had asked for a release to transfer.
At this point, the most likely school appears to be TCU, but Snead has several options such as Houston, UTEP and Louisville available. According to sources, Snead would like to enroll in his new school in January, which significantly decreases the chance that the QB will join the Longhorns for their bowl game.
If Snead leaves the UT program before the bowl game, Colt McCoy?s only back-up will be walk-on senior Matt McCoy. The Horns' only other scholarship QB is true freshman Sherrod Harris, who has not played in '06 and who is unlikely to strip his redshirt for a single game if McCoy is unable to play or is injured again.
Word of a possible transfer first surfaced back in late October, when reports indicated that a party close to the Longhorn back-up had made inquiries with several schools gauging their interest in Snead as a transfer.
But just a couple of weeks later, Snead was pressed into action vs. Kansas State when starter McCoy left the game in the first quarter with a neck injury. He completed 13 of 30 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown vs. the Wildcats in a 45-42 loss that dropped Texas from the national championship picture.
Snead worked with the first team offense during the Horns' bye week and early the week of the A&M game, but was again relegated to back-up duty when the coaches announced McCoy as the Aggie game starter. Despite reports that McCoy was at less than 100-percent for the A&M game, Snead's only action came on the Horns' final desperation drive after McCoy had to be carted off the field.
For the season, Snead completed 26 of 49 passes (53.1 percent) for 371 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Snead was a late commit to Texas after originally committing to Florida. The Stephenville QB was later convinced, in no small part, by fellow QB prospect Harris to come to UT (Tim Tebow?s expected commitment to Florida also played a bit of a role). Future depth at quarterback should not be an issue for the Longhorns, although experienced depth will indeed be lacking. Harris, along with incoming freshmen John Brantley and John Chiles, will compete for playing time at the position next season.

Texas denies reports of QB transfer

Posted: Thursday November 30, 2006 8:19PM

AUSTIN (AP) -- No Texas players have been granted a release to transfer, a school official said Thursday amid conflicting reports that backup quarterback Jevan Snead would leave the team.

The Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman and Houston Chronicle reported that Snead plans to transfer, possibly in time to enroll at a new school for the spring semester. Those stories cited anonymous sources.

But Snead told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he has not asked for a release from his scholarship and said "nothing's happening right now."

Texas spokesman John Bianco said no players had been granted a release as of Thursday afternoon and that conversations players may have had with coach Mack Brown are confidential.

Snead was unavailable for comment, and calls to his parents' home in Stephenville went unanswered Thursday.

Asked Wednesday night if a transfer was something he might consider, Snead told the Star-Telegram: "I don't know. I don't feel comfortable talking about that right now."

Snead was one of Texas' top recruits when he backed out of an oral commitment with Florida and signed with the Longhorns in February. He enrolled in time for spring practice but couldn't beat out redshirt freshman Colt McCoy for the starting job.

Snead completed 26 of 49 passes for 371 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His most extensive action came in a 45-42 loss at Kansas State. McCoy was hurt on the first drive, and Snead played the rest of the game.

McCoy has passed for 2,262 yards and a school-record 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

McCoy was injured again late in last week's 12-7 loss to Texas A&M, and his status for the Longhorns' bowl game is unclear. Texas appears headed to either the Gator Bowl or Alamo Bowl.

Good article on McCoy's propensity for injury

Heh...

Snead leaving to me isn't the best move, with as Injury prone as McCoy is I would hang around, sooner or later he's gonna take one hard hit and Snead would get in. However, that being said, Snead didn't look so hot against K-State when he had is chance.

Texas backup QB Snead to transferPosted 12/1/2006 8:36 PM ET

AUSTIN (AP) ? Texas backup quarterback Jevan Snead will transfer, school officials announced Friday night, leaving the Longhorns with no experienced quarterback behind the injured Colt McCoy for their bowl game.

McCoy, who severely pinched a nerve in the final seconds of a 12-7 loss to Texas A&M, has not yet been cleared by team doctors for whichever bowl game selects Texas, although team trainer Kenny Boyd said Friday he is "progressing extremely well."

"Colt is a great quarterback, and I enjoyed working with him and all the guys on the team," Snead said in a statement released by the school. "Texas is a great place to be. I just think that for me to reach my goal of being a starting quarterback, I need to go somewhere else."

The statement did not say where Snead, a freshman, planned to attend.
Texas is likely headed to either the Gator or Alamo bowls. McCoy's backup for the bowl game would be senior walk-on Matt McCoy, no relation, who has never thrown a pass in a game.

Two of Texas' top receivers, Quan Cosby and Billy Pittman, were standout quarterbacks in high school. Cosby was a USA Today high school All-American at Mart in 2000 before signing a minor league baseball contract.
Texas also has freshman QB Sherrod Harris but has redshirted him this season.

Snead was one of Texas' top recruits when he backed out of an oral commitment with Florida and signed with the Longhorns in February. He enrolled in time for spring practice but couldn't beat out redshirt freshman Colt McCoy for the starting job.

McCoy has passed for 2,262 yards and a school-record 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Also transferring are sophomore defensive end Chris Brown and sophomore offensive tackle Greg Dolan, both of whom have seen limited action at Texas.

"All three guys told us they had a great experience, but they felt their best opportunity for more playing time was to transfer," coach Mack Brown said.

"That's totally understandable, and we appreciate everything they did for our program during their time here. We wish all three the best of luck in the future."

I'm a "side" University of Houston fan, and I think that would be a GREAT place for him. Look at the success that Kevin Kolb has had there in his four years. They have a really great offensive passing system there, it would be such an excellent fit for someone like him who wants a passing orientated offense.

... BTW Houston won the Conference USA Championship tonight! Pretty awesome, their first conference title in over a decade! They're starting to revert back to their glory days when they were beating the crap out of UT and A&M in the '70s. I think they're here to stay and the thing I love most about the UH Football program is that they play legimate non-conference opponets every year. They never shy away from teams like Oklahoma, Miami, or anything like that. Always up for a challenge, gotta love teams that are willing for that!

Texas quarterback Sneed may transfer to Ole Miss
By Robbie Neiswanger

OXFORD ? Freshman quarterback Jevan Snead is transferring from Texas and one of his potential destinations is Ole Miss.

Chad Morris, who coached Snead at Stephenville (Texas) High, said members of the Rebels' coaching staff will visit the quarterback today. Snead, who played in eight games for the Longhorns as a backup in 2006, received his release from the school and is considering Ole Miss, Louisville or Texas Christian.

"I think there's some interest from Ole Miss and some interest from Jevan," Morris said. "He's basically just looking for the right fit right now and is going to come into a situation where the quarterbacks are going to give him an opportunity play. He doesn't want to come into a situation where they've got a lot of young quarterbacks, he just got out of that situation at Texas."

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Snead was rated as the nation's sixth-best quarterback by Scout.com out of high school. But redshirt freshman Colt McCoy won the starting job at Texas in 2006, limiting Snead to 26 of 49 passes for 371 yards.

Ole Miss' quarterback Brent Schaeffer and backup Seth Adams will be seniors next season. The Rebels also have freshmen Cliff Davis and Michael Herrick.

Snead will have to sit out a year because of NCAA transfer rules, but would have three years of eligibility remaining. Morris said Snead won't rush his decision and probably won't announce where he'll transfer to until after Christmas.

"There's some possibilities out there, but Ole Miss has definitely keyed his interest because of the situation with Schaeffer and all the young kids that they're starting at the skill positions," Morris said.

Jevan Snead, ex-Ole Miss quarterback, dies in Texas at 32
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Jevan Snead went to Mississippi to rekindle a promising football career that had stalled at Texas. By the time he left the Rebels, with a year of eligibility remaining, he ranked among the most prolific passers in school history.

Snead was found dead in Austin, Texas, on Saturday night by officers responding to a call about a deceased person near downtown. He was 32.

A police spokeswoman said the death was not considered suspicious. Police and the Travis County medical examiner’s office provided no further information Monday.
