Jersey Scrimmage - Saturday, August 18th

i don't think anyone should be "convinced" yet. any true convincing may not come until purdue.

I think MSU will be the first team that challenges us directly in the way we seem to be most vulnerable. I don't think they are good enough overall to beat us but a lot could be gleaned about our run D from this game.

Problem is that that starting the very next week we play 3 of 4 with teams that can no doubt about it run the ball. If we see a big problem vs MSU it will probably be too late for them to do anything about.

All in all its like we have been saying all off season, this team could be 8-0 and we could still not know that much about them. Looking foreward to finding out though :wink2:.

Realistically, if we get a solid effort from the run defense, it won't take a lot from the rest of the team, offense, kicking game, to win games.
The defense doesn't have to win games on their own ability.

Jersey Scrimmage recap...
Boeckman and Schoenhoft have separated themselves from Henton IMO.

Receivers looked good (Robo, Hartline, Sanzenbacher, Dukes, and Washington)

TEs had a lot of balls thrown there way, look for that to continue this season.

Oline looked pretty good, Rehring is back with the first unit.

I was surprised at how good the offense looked today, they were able to stay away from turnovers and move the chains on third down.

Mo Wells got a little dinged up today, he should be alright. Saine and Herron both looked pretty good. Marcus Williams probably looked the best out of the 3 though.

Scott might be one of the smaller guys on the field, but he can hit. JD Larson was on a crossing route across the field and Scott hit him so hard his chin strap ripped in half and his helmet flew about 10 feet.

Was surprised that the D didn't create more turnovers, but they are trying a lot of things right now trying to figure schemes and rotations.

Storm Klein and another prospect was there today (pretty sure he was a LB prospect) and Tressel spent a lot of time with them.

QBs combine for just one interception in scrimmage

The Columbus Dispatch

It seems fitting that on a day when Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said his players looked "heavy-legged," the quarterbacks ran in place.

After a lengthy jersey scrimmage yesterday in Ohio Stadium, the quarterback depth chart was unchanged. Todd Boeckman remained the starter, followed by Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton.
The good news for Tressel was that unlike in the spring, the quarterbacks took good care of the ball. That helped the offense win the closed scrimmage. Tressel said he thought the score was 72-58.
"It was a good experience for those quarterbacks," Tressel said. "I thought we did some good things. We made a couple throws maybe we shouldn't have. A couple of them didn't turn out to be turnovers and could have."

Tupa was a QB/Punter. Why can't you be a Punter/RB? :) I thought maybe you could convince Tressel you had a few years of eligibility left. :wink2:

Wasn't sure if you meant as a Punter which would be obvious or you were hinting on the RB idea...LOL!

As for punting, give me 3-4 months to get in some physical shape and be technically sound and I could win that job no problem.

Firstly; Tom Tupa was a much better athlete then some here give him credit for. :tongue2:

Secondly; The Good and the Bad

The Bad; No way Beanie is going to be healthy the whole season. Plan on it.
The Good; Even if Beanie can't play, we may just be good enough on offense to win a lot of games!
Boeckman can throw the rock and we got many guys who can catch it!
And we may have enough good quality backs to pick up the slack when Beanie isn't being used.

A balanced offense with a "good enough" defense will win you most games!
I feel better and more positive about the coming season.

OSU Offense Shows Signs of Hope in Win over Defense in Jersey Scrimmage
By John Porentas
With one notable exception, the jersey scrimmage probably couldn't have been much better, at least for the OSU offense.
Despite the loss of two-year starter Troy Smith at quarterback the offense defeated the defense by a final of 72-58. They did it by avoiding turnovers, something which often plagues teams with a new quarterback.
OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel said the scrimmage consisted of just over 150 plays, the number you might expect in two games, and over all those snaps the offense turned the ball over just once on a Kurt Coleman interception of Robby Schoenhoft. Beside that one turnover, the offense protected the ball like a hive of bees protecting the queen bee and as a result won the scrimmage and the right to wear the red jerseys to practice for the remainder of the season.

I am not that surprised by the offense showing well in the scrimmage. Is it so easy to forget that we have one of the best, if not the best, offensive lines in the country this season? People are also forgetting that the offense and defense are split during the spring so theres no continuity and sometimes freshmen trying to block Vern Gholston and company, which isnt going to happen. Boeckman can be another Craig Krenzel or better. He's mobile enough to get the yards running. He has a nice touch on the ball, and no other QB in our history has or will be here as long as Todd. Robbie is more than a serviceable backup so we are in much better shape than previously expected. The TE's on this offense are a strength and they don't get much mention. When our QB's are progresssing through their checkdowns they will be finding the TE's much more this season and those guys will perform, I'm sure of it. The biggest question mark at the moment is at RB. We know Beanie is banged up and he will not make it the entire season healthy so the guys behind him have to really step it up. If opposing defenses don't fear our running game, it doesnt matter who is at QB, they won't stand a chance against the pressure.

I'm cautiously optimistic at this point but its looking better and better every day.

Its too early to tell gentlemen. Beanie has so much to prove. Just like everybody body else each new year. I personally believe that this team could do better than last year's team. Yes, that is winning a NC. You can't teach speed and this team this year has more of it. :osu:
