Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
When Jeff Hafley walked to the podium in the Ohio State football team room to meet with a large media contingent last February, most people in the room had no real idea what to expect.
Hafley had, after all, been away from college football for seven seasons and had faded into the relative obscurity of life as a position coach in the NFL. He had worked with Ryan Day in San Francisco 49ers organization and when Day hired him as his first ever defensive coordinator, there were some who questioned whether or not that decision was based on their relationship more than Hafley’s competency as a coach.
“We had several conversations about coaching in college, and that’s where we both wanted to end up,” Day said about hiring Hafley after taking over the Ohio State program from Urban Meyer. “I didn’t know I’d be the head coach here, and that’s how it would work out. But I always knew I’d coach with him again.”
By the time that first press conference ended, the media’s conversation about Hafley had done a complete 180-degree turn. It wasn’t a matter of Why would Ryan Day hire Jeff Hafley anymore.
It was quickly a question of How long can Ryan Day hold on to Jeff Hafley?

Hafley wants to build a culture at Boston College like that which he was a part of last year at Ohio State. Specifically, Hafley wants that culture to start in the weight room – like it does under Mickey Marotti’s leadership in Columbus – which is why he hired Phil Matusz, who had been one of Marotti’s assistants at Ohio State since 2014, as Boston College’s head strength and conditioning coach.
“I think that’s very, very important, to set the culture and the mindset of a team in the weight room,” Hafley said.
“I’ve never met a group of players that were so committed to doing and challenging themselves on a daily basis,” Matusz said of Ohio State’s 2014 championship run during an interview session with Boston College reporters in May. “To continue on and practice the way we did and train the way we did, many people are like, ‘You’re going too hard. You’re not going to be able to withstand the rigors of college football from Week 10 to the final game, you’re not gonna make it.’ And that’s where mindset and will, it’s amazing to see what the human body is capable of when you believe in something. And in that locker room, you had a lot of people that believed in each other, from coaches and players. It’s really, really cool to see what the game of football can do for players.”
Just sayin'; I wonder how many others out there would be considered to be on Mickey Marotti's "(head strength and conditioning) coaching tree"......

I think he will find very quickly that you don't replicate Ohio State's culture and success in a year or two.

Everyone always tries but with limited success
1. Ash- fail
2. Fickle-pretty good
3. Herman- hit or miss
4. Whithers- fail
That said I think Hafley will do well I really do. I think he will sledge through 2-3 years of 6-8 wins seasons but then someone will give him a shot like Sparty or somewhere.

Gotta bump his thread cause he’s one of my all time favorites and he was only here a year. Game #1 with BC against Duke tomorrow at noon.
I loved what Hafley did with our defense last year and think he was an amazing addition, even if it was short lived. I could speak for hours about all the cool shit he did in the secondary and how he enhanced the defense after Schiano’s butchered year before him.
BC is my second favorite team in the country this year.
I don’t have high expectations for them, especially trying to make a transition with Covid.
Jaelen Gill also named starting slot receiver. Pulling for him as well.

Dantonio cured me rooting for former assistants once they're gone way back when.
Their new job requires them to try to beat OSU for recruits and on the field. Period. They are no longer friendlies when it comes down to it.
Only exception to that rule, for me personally, is Fickell and it's because he was a player but I don't exactly wish good things on UC because of him.
