I think we should all take a moment to reflect on the impact of this terrible news. We may never have the joy of watching Kobayashi devour 50+ hot dogs again. :sob:

A JAPANESE man who set a world record by wolfing down 53 hot dogs in 12 minutes has suffered a severe jaw injury due to his rigorous training, making his next title uncertain.

Takeru 'Tsunami' said he can only open his mouth to make a gap the size of a fingertip after being diagnosed with jaw arthritis.


In an entry on his blog entitled Occupational Hazard, Kobayashi said: "My jaw refused to fight any more."

Wait a min and hold the presses, this isn't as bad as it seems. I don't remember reading anything in the hot dog quaffing rules about mincing the doggies up before you insert and swallow. :biggrin:

Not true! The dread Linda Lovelace Disease can force eventual closure of the mouth due to repeated over opening of the oriface.

Most often, the cause of a temporomandibular disorder is a combination of muscle tension and anatomic problems within the joints. Muscle pain and tightness around the jaw (myofascial pain syndrome) come mainly from muscle overuse, often brought on by problems of misalignment of the upper and lower sets of teeth, missing teeth, injury to the head or neck, or even toothache. Pain is also produced by trying to open the jaw too widely.

He barely chews the food the sucks down, so I'm guessing its from gaping his jaw wide to stuff in as much as he can. Doesn't he do two fisted hotdog eating?

Have some pity for the guy...

It's like you forget that he has to eat to, you know, survive, not just compete.

His quality of life just shot down the shitter.

I can't imagine not being able to chomp into a nice big double double. The size of a finger? That's a crazy straw's width!
