Selig addresses HGH use in open letter to fans

Associated Press

<!-- begin body-content -->NEW YORK - In an open letter to fans, commissioner Bud Selig said he will not tolerate the use of human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing drugs in baseball.
Selig's letter was to appear in several publications Friday and on MLB.com. Though he didn't name Jason Grimsley, the commissioner said he was disappointed and angered by a player's admission that he used HGH, and the player's statements that other major leaguers use the banned substance.
On June 6, federal agents who cracked the BALCO steroid scandal in San Francisco raided Grimsley's Arizona home following his admission that he had used HGH, steroids and amphetamines. The pitcher also reportedly named several players who he said were using HGH, which is currently undetectable in testing. The reliever was released by the Diamondbacks the following day and given a 50-game suspension by Major League Baseball on Monday.
Selig warned that players who use banned substances also put themselves in legal jeopardy.
"These individuals break the rules of baseball," he said. "But the use of steroids, human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing drugs in this manner is also against the law. The investigative abilities of the FBI are powerful and baseball players are no different from anyone else in our society. If you break the law, you put yourself at risk."
The commissioner said the overwhelming majority of players obey the rules, but some cheat to try to get an edge and raise suspicions about the integrity of their teammates while violating fans' trust in them.
Selig said he was proud of baseball's steroid policy and would continue to support research for a reliable urine test to detect HGH.

David Segui says he used HGH legally

Associated Press

<!-- begin body-content -->NEW YORK - Former major leaguer David Segui said he used HGH and was among the players mentioned by ex-teammate Jason Grimsley to federal investigators. Segui added that he used the drug with a doctor's prescription because of a growth hormone deficiency.
Segui, who spent 15 years in the majors and retired in 2004, said on ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Sunday that he continues to use HGH legally. He said he first started using the hormone after the deficiency was found when he went for blood work before surgery during his playing career.
The 39-year-old first baseman said Grimsley came to him this past offseason, seeking advice about HGH and how it might help him recover from major arms surgery. Grimsley was waived by the Arizona Diamondbacks this month after acknowledging HGH use and accusing other players of its use in a statement to federal agents.
Segui played for Baltimore, the New York Mets, Montreal, Seattle, Toronto, Texas and Cleveland from 1990 to 2004, finishing with a .291 average and 139 homers. He and Grimsley were Orioles teammates in 2004.
The names of the other players accused by Grimsley have not yet been made public.
