January Flurry of Commits

They can say what they want, but 50-13, 4-1 vs. scUM, 4-1 in bowls(3-0 BCS), 2 Big Ten titles and a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP says otherwise to me.

We are embarking on another golden age of Buckeye football, and Coach Tressel is responsible.

In January 2003, winning the NC in the Sonoran Desert ended a magical season and the best OSU football season in my adult life. Nothing can top a NC since it implies that (a) scUM goes down and (b) a bowl victory.

This season may be the second best OSU football season in my adult life because we ended the year with a victory over scUM and a victory over ND. Personally, the two teams I despise the most. The only way it gets better is if the bowl victory over ND had resulted in a NC (maybe next year?)

So yes I think we may be in the beginnings of a special time in the history of OSU football. I have never been so optimistic about the future of the program (thank you JT). Being able to share this experience with my 9 year old and 11 year old sons is simply icing on the cake.

Just a brief perspective of how JT has done compared to some of the prominent coaches of our time and throughout history. Him and Bobby Stoops both won titles in year two. A great deal of credit to both coaches. Stoops was taking over a moribound OU program that had suffered through a decade of mediocrity, and JT took over our beloved Buckeyes after the Cooper era had bottomed out. JT deserves some special recognition for leading his squad to the only 14-0 record in Division 1 history. Bo's record through his first five years is truly remarkable, but he won zero National titles, and would remain without one after 21 years at _ichigan. Carr won a shared title in his third season with an undeniably fantastic scUM team, but has not been competitive since. Mack Brown developed a rep for losing the big one until this season (his eighth). Spurrier and Bowden both had significant success down there with that "Florida Speed", but Spurrier took seven and Bowden eighteen years to win a national title . Osborne took 22 years to get a ring, and put together a string of 9-3 type seasons to start his career. You can't deny what Pete Carroll has done in LA. He has awakened a sleeping giant. His detractors could argue that "anyone can recruit in LA', and that may be true, but several failed before him. Finally a couple of legends in Georgia's Vince Dooley and 'Bama's "Bear" Bryant. JT compares favoriably to both. Bryant has him in win percentage, but took two additional seasons to win a national title.

The bottom line of this post is that you can see that JT is comparable to some of the greats of all time. Not just at Ohio State, but in all of CFB. He has taken our beloved Buckeyes to new heights, and he does it without shying away from top notch competition. All of these coaches listed above have a place in history, and I can say with confidence that JT will be mentioned with the greats one day. We have witnessed over his five years in Columbus a stoic presence on the sidelines, and a remarkable ability to step up in the big games. I can't wait to see what the next five years hold for Buckeye football, because I have a feeling it just might surpass the past five. Is it September Yet? GO BUCKS!

Likely non RS's-Chris Wells, Ross Homan, Mark Johnson, Kurt Coleman-especially if he plays CB. Rose is also a possibility, due to the depth issues w/ Williams and Worthington's knees, as Mili mentioned. Ballard also may get a look at TE or DE,IMO-let him move to tackle in 07. Everyone else-who knows. I would be shocked if Browning or Smith do not RS.

I'm most impressed by the demographics and the geography of this haul. I mean - you can look in every direction now and find a Buckeye. From that list, there are seven recruits, and they hail from six different states.
  • Tressel continues to pretty much get who he wants in Ohio.
  • He has maintained OSU's strong ties in Florida.
  • He had pulled a player from "the South". (For the purposes of this discussion the South does not include Florida.) It cannot be understated just how difficult is getting a southern recruit out of that region, especially when going head-to-head against southern schools.
  • He is building a presence in PA and CA. How many programs can seriously say they have a significant recruiting presence in four (OH, FL, PA, CA) of the top six (+ TX, LA) talent-producing states?
  • Glenville - the tradition continues...
  • Plus, he's started stealing some kids from that state up north.

Great post. Hate to state the obvious, but you may be seeing the shape of future Buckeye classes. Dominate the home front, continue to solidify the gains made in recruiting hotbeds, and, most importantly, continue to win the big games, especially on national t.v. And I'll even throw in the Texas loss (fight to the finish, great atmosphere) as the type of game that recruits want to play in. As people see what Ohio State is really about, hard nosed D, big play O (did I just type that?), the lure will continue to grow. This is just not blind luck that this is happening. Seems like that D1-AA coach has a pretty good plan after all.

One result of the JT realm is that I really don't follow recruiting much any more. Basically, if JT gets a player, I pretty much figure he's gonna be good. I used to "follow" if we got Fred Davis or Mike D'Andrea, but I really don't care much about the 5 star players. It's just a waste of time. Look at some of the great players on this last team:

Santonio Holmes
AJ Hawk
Troy Smith
Ashton Youboty

Sure Ginn is a stud and everybody knew he would be. But nobody really was salivating that much when Hawk or Smith or Holmes signed. And look where they are now.

Tibor? Is that you?

Couldn't agree more. Not totally true...who wasn't salivating at a linebacker named A.J. Hawk?

Don't forget about Nick Mangold: Scout.com had him listed as a 1 star recruit...way to kill our Team recruiting ranking by taking this guy, Coach. How did this Mangold kid end up doing anyway? Anyone got an update on how his OSU career went?

I do not think that list includes many from the former half vs these guys: Wells, Homan, Coleman, Schwartz, etc

Bingo. Of the 18 guys we have right now, I'd say the following are sure to see the field:

Wells
Smith
Rose
Coleman (ST)
Homan (ST)
Schwartz (ST)
Moeller (ST)
Chichester (ST)

Johnson will probably make special teams also, but of the newer recruits I previously listed, only Rose is sure-fire. If Johnson does make special teams, that's nine of 18 (there's your half).

I'd put vCash on it that Coleman sees time at CB or nickleback, not just special teams. It's a position of need, he's got the talent to fill in, and he's coming in early to learn.

Johnson's gotta see time at ST too.

Chichester on ST, do mean to mostly block punts and FG/ex-pts? I would doubt he would be on kickoff coverage.
