Everyone click on the YouTube link and sing along:

Who is the tall, dark stranger there?
Maverick is the name.
Ridin' the trail to who knows where,
Luck is his companion,
Gamblin' is his game.
Smooth as the handle on a gun.
Maverick is the name.
Wild as the wind in Oregon,
Blowin' up a canyon,
Easier to tame.

Riverboat, ring your bell,
Fare thee well, Annabel.
Luck is the lady that he loves the best.
Natchez to New Orleans
Livin on jacks and queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.

Riverboat, ring your bell,
Fare thee well, Annabel.
Luck is the lady that he loves the best.
Natchez to New Orleans
Livin on jacks and queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.
Maverick is a legend of the west.

He actually did a sequel series later: This is a musical montage from the pilot episode of "Bret Maverick". It was a 1980s television series with James Garner reprising his Maverick role from the 1950s. The song was written and performed by the late great Ed Bruce

Maverick is one of my all time favorite shows.....RIP Bret.

Some words of wisdom from Bret Maverick's "old pappy":

Bret Maverick: As my old pappy used to say, work is fine for killin' time, but it's a shaky way to make a living.

Bret Maverick: As my old pappy used to say, "Son, stay clear of weddings because one of them is liable to be your own."

Bret Maverick: As my old pappy used to say, a man does what he has to do - if he can't get out of it.

Bret: My Pappy always said, "A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but one." A thousand to one is pretty good odds.

Bret Maverick: As my old pappy used to say, if at first you don't succeed, try something else.

Bret Maverick: Cole, as my old pappy always taught me, the only time you ever quit when you're winnin' is after you've won it all.

James Garner also served with the 5th RCT during the Korean War & participated in the Battle of the Pusan Perimeter where he was awarded the Purple Heart. In 1983 he received a 2nd Purple Heart for injuries suffered from a friendly fire incident during the same battle.

He also carried a 4 handicap and was a regular at the Crosby Clambake in Pebble Beach. Until his knees gave out. Good with the crowd and had a mega-watt smile. But I guess that's Hollywood for you. He did some great pictures, "Great Escape" already noted above, and the Maverick series was one of the best. He almost seems Buckeyesque.

Dont forget this instant classic: Tank

(ok, so it was reasonably bad, I was 11 when it came out and wanted to see it in the theater, my Mom, had a pretty major crush on Garner, so she relented... quickly... we used to watch Maverick... for... hours... to the degree that I actually got sick of it. I think she made me go see Murphy's Romance as payback... I think I got the short end of that stick)
