James “not elite” Franklin (HC Penn St. Nittany Lions)

In one of the pregame shows they talked about coaches being on the "hot seat". Someone asked who is on the bigger "hot seat", Ryan Day or James Franklin? The reply was whoever loses today.......

James Franklin Responds to Heckling Penn State Fan After Latest Loss to Ohio State

Following Ohio State's latest win over Penn State, a Nittany Lion fan had some words for Franklin as the coach walked off the field Saturday afternoon. Franklin stared at the fan, who continued to heckle him, and asked, "What's your name? “If you’re gonna be man enough to talk, what’s your name?” The fan then walked away.

That wasn't the first fan to show displeasure toward Franklin. As the coach watched Ohio State celebrate on the field, the Penn State faithful booed Franklin before the school's band played its alma mater.

While some Penn State fans booed Franklin and the Nittany Lions' performance, others even chanted "Fire Franklin!" as he walked toward the locker room after the game.

"I understand the frustration," Franklin said in his postgame press conference. "Guys in the locker room are just as frustrated, if not more, but college football has changed, and we have an opportunity moving forward to right some wrongs from today, and that's what we're going to focus on. I get it. We get an unbelievable crowd here. Unbelievable support. You don't do that without passion. There are great things to come from that and there are hard things to come from that. That's part of the job, and I own it all."

Franklin’s Nittany Lions have long been the third fiddle to conference heavyweights Ohio State and Michigan, owning a 4-16 record against the two programs.

Penn State has at least dispatched the Wolverines a few times in Franklin’s tenure. But the Buckeyes have had the program’s number, going 9-1 against Franklin and 5-0 under head coach Ryan Day.

Buyout Details of James Franklin's New Contract

Nov 23, 2023

Franklin and Penn State agreed to a new 10-year contract worth a guaranteed $70 million that includes multiple incentive clauses. Franklin will make an additional $1.5 million annually in incentives and can make up to $1 million per year in performance bonuses. The contract also makes it costly for Penn State to fire Franklin for performance reasons.

According to the buyout terms, Penn State would owe Franklin $8 million (his guaranteed salary plus a $1 million loan for life insurance) times the number of remaining years on the contract if it terminates him without cause.

As a result, Penn State's buyout is $72 million in 2022, $64 million in 2023 and $56 million in 2024. Even after five years, Franklin's termination buyout is $40 million. The term sheet Penn State released does not include whether those numbers can be mitigated or negotiated.

Conversely, if Franklin leaves for another NFL or college coaching position, he would owe Penn State these annual buyout totals:
  • 2022: $12 million until April 1, $8 million after April 1
  • 2023: $6 million
  • 2024: $2 million
  • 2026-30: $1 million
  • 2031: No buyout
Just sayin': If those buyout terms are accurate (and they probably are) Franklin isn't going anywhere for several more years. See the terms of Franklin's buyout (above) if he leaves Penn State. Notice the differenced in each parties' buyout; the Penn State lawyer who negotiated that contract was a moron......
