ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- A year ago, the Michigan football team spent its holiday break preparing to play in its second straight Rose Bowl against a nationally ranked opponent.
But next week, the Wolverines will leave for San Antonio, where they will make their first December postseason appearance in 10 years -- well removed from college football's brightest spotlight and well out of the hunt for a national title.
Michigan (7-4) faces Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl Dec. 28 and the team is hoping to salvage what, in Michigan football terms, has been a disappointing season that culminated in a 25-21 loss to rival Ohio State in the regular season's final game.

</NOSCRIPT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>A victory, Michigan players said Wednesday, would allow the Wolverines to finish the year on a positive note, and to avoid becoming the first Michigan team since 1984 to finish a season with five or more losses. Bo Schembechler's 1984 squad finished the year 6-6 after dropping a 24-17 Holiday Bowl decision to Brigham Young.
This year, Michigan accepted an Alamo Bowl invitation after Outback Bowl officials chose to invite Iowa to its Jan. 2 game even though the Wolverines finished with the same record as the Hawkeyes and won the regular-season meeting between the two teams.
"We get what we deserve," sophomore quarterback Chad Henne said. "We definitely don't want to go down with a loss. Nobody wants to have five losses. I don't know how long it's been since a team here has had five losses and we don't want to be that team."
Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr said Wednesday that the process that landed his team in San Antonio rather than Tampa had caused him to rethink his position on a playoff system that would determine college football's national champion.
"You have the (conference) commissioners, the bowl people, the TV people doing the (bowl) scheduling," Carr said. "I think it's only fair to the players that what happens on the field should dictate where you play. I never thought I would say this, but I think we should go to a playoff and do it on the field. I think that's only fair to the guys that play the game.
"The bowl games have always been a reward for what you do in the season. When you choose teams based on their ability to sell more tickets or fill more hotel rooms, I think that's unacceptable."
Players on Wednesday downplayed Michigan's nine-year January bowl run coming to an end, stressing instead the importance of playing well against Nebraska and laying the foundation for next season. A bowl victory is a bowl victory, players said, moving past the disappointment of being overlooked for a trip to Tampa's Outback Bowl.
The last time Michigan failed to earn a January bowl berth came in Carr's first year at Michigan when the Wolverines lost to Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl following the 1995 season.
"It still feels the same. It still feels like a January bowl, it's just a couple days early," senior outside linebacker Pierre Woods said. "Are we disappointed? No. Disappointment is Tennessee. They're not going to a bowl game."
Michigan has practiced three times in preparation for its game with Nebraska and will practice five more times before leaving for San Antonio late next week. Like his players, Carr expressed excitement in facing Nebraska regardless of the date and location of the bowl game. Michigan has played in each of the last two Rose Bowls, losing to Southern California and Texas. "It's different because we'll be coming home earlier," Carr said. "But from the standpoint of being able to play a game, it doesn't matter if you're going to play in a parking lot, it doesn't matter where you're going to play. It doesn't matter who's there. It's an opportunity to play."

Iowa finished hot, Michigan lost their last game (which they should be getting used to by now)...Iowa is the better team right now. If there was a playoff...then it'd have to be quite a large playoff for Michigan to be there, and I doubt they'd get very far. A playoff would help teams like Iowa, who have improved a lot, and could be strong right now. Michigan vs. Nebraska...two programs that are really down right now. Great stuff. Way to call out Tennessee too. That's a cheap shot. What the heck did Tennessee do to you?

EARTH TO MICHIGAN! The only reason that it was between you and Iowa for the Outback bowl, was because OHIO STATE got a BCS bid...bumping everybody up one bowl. It's a bonus. Neither of you should really be going there. Thank Ohio State for finishing as the 4th best team in the country, or you may even be at a worse bowl. Assholes.

I enjoy how he tries to change the subject after complaining about the bowl by throwing out the random, illogical playoff comment. here's to hoping the AD sticks by carr for years to come.

What the hell kind of stupid-ass moron whines about a playoff with a 7-4 team he coached? Earth to asshole, you wouldn't even be allowed to watch the frigging playoff, let alone play in it. So you go play in the Alamo instead of whatever the hell bowl game he wanted...who gives a crap? Be happy you get an extra month of practice to work some of your young guys in, take your kids on a vacation, and STFU!!!!! ASSHOLE!

Here's the thing. You don't see very many successful coaches consistantly blaming others for their own shortcomings. This has become a trend with that shithead for years now. How many times in any given game can he be seen stomping along the sidelines ranting and raving at officials? He is the reason for scUM's descent into mediocrity. Great coaches don't loose 3-4 games EVERY YEAR. Suck it lllloyd.

I don't have any documentation, but I'd be willing to bet that Tressel didn't complain about our Alamo Bowl berth, and our players probably displayed far more class concerning their opponent... I know for a fact Tressel and Co. took Okie State seriously... Sounds to me like Carr thinks Nebraska isn't worthy to play against his team, and even though I usually root for scUM in the bowl season, I hope Callahan blows them out.

agreed I always root for big ten teams in bowls... but it would be a beautiful thing to watch a horrible team like nebraska take it to them. However, is that sinister pleasure worth jeopardizing our favorite coach's career?

Look, I hate scUM as much as the next guy. But, I will still be rooting for them against Nebraska. They are B10, plain and simple.

"Are we disappointed? No. Disappointment is Tennessee. They're not going to a bowl game."

I don't care, that's funny. Any time someone sticks it to Fat Phil, I gotta chuckle.

How sad is it your starting QB, who will be back next year, says we don't want to be that 5 loss team instead of we want to win in order to show we are a good team. Sounds like he plays not to lose instead of playing to win.

I root for Big Ten, too. But I find it really tough to root for Michigan. A lot of times, I'll start watching a game, thinking, "Michigan's playing, so I'll root for them." But they'll throw an interception or something, and I'll find myself cheering. It's hard to get it in my head that a Michigan win is good for the Big 10. It's easy to root for Purdue or Michigan State or Iowa or Northwestern or Wisconsin or Penn State, but Michigan - not so easy.
