Here is something from his chat:

Vishal (Columbus): What do you think of the QB situation at Ohio State and its impact on the Buckeyes' season?

Ivan Maisel: I don't have any great wisdom there. I'm waiting to see like everyone else. But as for impact on the Buckeyes, I can't imagine it will be a whole lot. Let's face it, Krenzel was no world-beater last year. That team won on defense and tenacity. Those are the trademarks of Tressel-ball.

Rich (Raleigh): I read the chat from Beano Cook and usually enjoy his commentary but he was overly critical of the Big Ten. the Big Ten has easily held it's own over the last decade, your thoughts ?

Ivan Maisel: Over the last decade? Sure, they won 2 national championships. It has shown competitive balance. If we are talking about this year, I agree with Beano. I don't expect great things. But over the last 10, they've had some pretty solid teams.
Not quite sure how to take his comments on OSU and the Big 10, but my opinion is that he is luke warm on both.....

Definitely, he always has been. He originally had OSU in his preseason rankings behind the likes of Utah.

Most of these people who rank the B10 as a decided fourth behind the SEC, BigXII, and now the ACC say the same thing every year..."Sure, they've been good in the past, but they're not now". Then, when it doesn't pan out that way, they move on and say the same the following year.

I really do think that too many people are still living in the 'Big 2' and the rest of the league era.

While NW, Ill, and Indiana are in fact stiffs, I worry that anyone among scUM, Purdue, Iowa and Wisky will give us a great game if not beat us if we don't play our best.

Minnesota should have it's best team in many years while John L. Smith has the Spartan playing much better ball.

At this point we have 3 'bottom feeders' and I'm not really sure if I would call the Ilini because they we good in the last few years at some point.

We may not be the best, but our top 5 of OSU, scUM, Wisky, Iowa and Purdue can hang with anyone else's top 5.

The ACC, which some have been hyping as a "superconference", could be described as the big 2 and the little 10. Will anyone other than Miami or FSU ever win that conference? And if you line up the "best of the rest" between the Big10 and ACC, there's just no comparison.

For that matter, every conference has its top one or two, it's solid middle, and its doormats (less so the Pac, and no longer the BigEast). To me, the only reason that people focus on that aspect with the B10 is that OSU and Michigan are virtually the only elite teams out there that have never had an extended (more than a couple of years) down period in a long, long time. So they're essentially always in the conference title race. It's not that the Big10 has fewer quality contenders, it's just that their top dogs are the most consistent historically. And I do think that PSU will get back to premiere program status within the next 5 years or so.

Speaking of Maisel, his article described as this, "...goes in the trenches and finds that just about every run at a national title is paved by an experienced offensive line" was kind of bizarre. Aside from a handful of quotes and pseudo-opinions, he tipped his cap to Oklahoma and then made some extensive homage to the Virginia Cavaliers.
