Is the NFL 'harvesting' college talent?

  • I'm sorry, but I've gotta bring this topic up. Every time I turn on an evening sportscast this time of year or a late-season college game, I hear reference made to the NFL combine. As all of you know, it's the event(s) where eligible college athletes perform strength/speed/technique drills in a controlled environment so NFL scouts can assess the players potential. Now, I always hear it pronounced [kom'-bine], which conjurs this image for me:

Now, the event is actually a 'combination' of various exercises and drills and I would assume this is how it got it's name. Shouldn't it be pronounced [kom-bine']? I'm tired of thinking about harvest time when it comes to the NFL's winter scouting workout sessions, but perhaps it's an apt analogy.
