So, it's $200 for 2GB, or $400 for 60GB? That's a tad uneven.
It's because the 2GB version is Flash memory. The 60GB version is an actual disk drive, which is cheaper. And for what it's worth... flash memory has a limited number of writes/erases. The number is pretty high at 10,000--But it's still a possibility for it to die because of excessive writing/erasing.

For more information than you want to know on flash memory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory

I just want to highlight this part of it.
"The cost per byte of flash memory remains significantly higher than the corresponding cost of a hard disk drive, and that (on top of finite number of erase-write cycles previously mentioned) has prevented flash from becoming a solid state replacement for the hard disk drive on normal desktop and laptop computers."

Gotta love people shelling out dough for IPOD's when they go obsolete in a year just like any other technology.

At least flash memory can be damaged as easily if you drop it on the ground like a hard drive like a normal IPOD.

Besides, who needs 10,000 songs on an IPOD anyways, isn't 1000 songs enough?

I got my fiance an MP3 player for $20 that uses an SD card. Right now I put in the 128MB card that I got for free, but if she starts using it more I'll get her a 1 or 2 gig card. That is more than she will need on a portable device.

I love the fact that I was able to go into best buy and buy a new portable cd player for 10 dollars the other day. Thank you IPOD for making all these people forget that a cd player is just as good.

I think the idea of the ipod is great but I don't see spending as much money as people are spending. wait a few years and the price will drop and the durability will be better.

My question is, how many songs are enough? Do we really need 10,000 songs at our disposal?

Seems like overkill to me or a reason that certain people can brag about how many songs their IPOD has. Probably just making up for having a small wiener.

Well that is one of the things I don't understand either. I don't have 10,000 songs that I would need at my disposal at any time. I would think eventually apple would want to come out with a version that held maybe 100 songs that would probally fly off the shelves

Again at this point I think they are overrated and a status symbol more than anything.

I have a 15GB player, and I love being able "shuffle" through my entire mp3 collection. It's also great for long roadtrips -- no need to bring any CDs with you. I need those 10,000 songs, dammit!
