I don't think it is so much "upsets" as it is harder to rank teams than it used to be before the scholie limits and extensive TV coverage for more and more schools. The gap between the big boys and little guys is smaller, and the pollsters have no idea who is better than whom, especially early in the year.

The result? More "upsets".
